Monetary and financial statistics – August 2018


According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, broad money supply continued to grow in August with a stable share of patacas. Meanwhile, resident deposits rose from a month ago whereas loans to residents posted a decline.

Money supply

Currency in circulation and demand deposits dropped 0.3% and 3.8% respectively. M1 thus decreased 3.1% from one month earlier. On the other hand, quasi-monetary liabilities rose 1.4%. The sum of these two items, i.e. M2, increased 0.8% to MOP621.5 billion. On an annual basis, M1 and M2 grew 14.3% and 8.2% respectively. The shares of pataca (MOP), Hong Kong dollar (HKD), renminbi (RMB) and United States dollar (USD) in M2 were 31.3%, 51.4%, 4.4% and 10.8% respectively.

Deposits

Resident deposits grew 0.9% from the preceding month to MOP606.1 billion whereas non-resident deposits fell 1.8% to MOP236.3 billion. On the other hand, public sector deposits with the banking sector increased 1.7% to MOP218.7 billion. As a result, total deposits in the banking sector grew 0.4% from a month earlier to MOP1,061.1 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total deposits were 20.1%, 51.1%, 4.1% and 21.6% respectively.

Loans

Domestic loans to the private sector fell 0.6% from a month ago to MOP478.5 billion while external loans also dropped 0.6% to MOP503.2 billion. As a result, total loans to the private sector decreased 0.6% from a month earlier to MOP981.6 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total loans were 15.8%, 49.9%, 3.3% and 27.7% respectively.

Operating ratios

At end-August, the loan-to-deposit ratio for the resident sector dropped from 59.0% at end-July to 58.0%. Meanwhile, the ratio for both the resident and non-resident sectors fell from 93.5% to 92.5%. The one-month and three-month current assets to liabilities ratios stayed at relatively high levels of 57.4% and 53.9% respectively. Concurrently, the non-performing loan ratio remained virtually stable at 0.2%.
