CE attends opening of China International Import Expo in Shanghai

The first China International Import Expo is held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai.

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today briefed President Xi Jinping on Macao’s progress while the President and other guests toured one of the Macao exhibition areas at the inaugural China International Import Expo (CIIE).

Mr Chui’s briefing for the President happened after the Expo’s opening ceremony, at an Expo exhibition area titled “Macao Hub”, a section set up by the Macao SAR Government within the China Pavilion of CIIE’s “County Pavilion”.

CIIE was opened this morning by President Xi, who also delivered a keynote speech at the ceremony. The event, being held from 5 to 10 November in Shanghai, is the world's first import-themed national-level expo.

During the afternoon, Mr Chui toured a second Macao-themed display area, organised by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM). It is at the CIIE’s “Trade in Goods – Foods and Agricultural Products Zone”, within the “Business Pavilion”.

Mr Chui visited several booths at the IPIM display and was briefed on the progress of the participating Macao enterprises and the products they had on display, as well as on other products made in Macao.

A third Macao-themed display at the Expo has been organised by the Macao Government Tourist Office and the Cultural Industry Fund. It is at the “Trade in Services – Integrated Services Zone”, also within the Enterprise and Business Pavilion. The aim of this display is to promote Macao’s function as a platform for trade and cooperation.

Macao Hub features photographs, text, videos and multimedia materials to tell the story of how Macao developed from a fishing village in the 16th century to an international commercial centre where East meets West. Since reunification with the motherland in 1999, Macao has been fully supported by the Central People’s Government regarding local efforts to seize opportunities arising from the advantages and policies of “One country, two systems”. Such efforts include developing Macao as a “Centre and Platform” integrated into the overall national development plan, and to ensure Macao continues to play a role as an important gateway between China and the rest of the world.

Mr Chui was an official guest at CIIE’s inauguration. On Sunday evening, as part of his two-day visit to Shanghai, Mr Chui attended a welcoming dinner.

Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Mr Yao Jian, joined the Government delegation as a guest.

The Government delegation itself, returned to Macao on Monday evening.

Other members of the Government delegation included: the Secretary for Economy and Finance, Mr Leong Vai Tac; the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms O Lam; the Director of the Government Information Bureau, Mr Chan Chi Ping; and the Director of the Protocol, Public Relations and External Affairs Office, Ms Lei Ut Mui.
