The Macao Consumer Council and the Consumer Association of Hengqin New Area of Zhuhai work together and offer cross-border arbitration service to a consumer in Macao for the first time through the “Cross-border video mediation platform”, the whole process took less than half an hour and the consumer states that the service is convenient.
The Consumer Arbitration Centre under the Macao Consumer Council launched its cross-border mediation and arbitration service early this year and expanded the service with Zhuhai City, Jiangmen City, Foshan City, Hengqin New Area of Zhuhai and Hong Kong SAR.
Macao and Hengqin launched “Cross-border video conferencing mediation platform” service
In order to expand the efficacy and applicability of online cross-border mediation and arbitration service and to further utilize its network equipment, the Council extended its service and launched the “Cross-border video conferencing mediation platform” service with Hengqin Consumer Association, the service is offered to Macao residents when consumer disputes happen in Hengqin and complaints lodged with Hengqin Consumer Associatio. The two consumer organizations carried out mediation and with the assistance of the Macao Consumer Council, the concerned consumer stayed and utilized the equipment in Macao to carry out the cross-border mediation service offered by Hengqin Consumer Association.
The first cross-border mediation case was settled earlier by both consumer organizations, the consumer dispute involved a local resident purchasing real estate in Hengqin and a real estate agent in that Area, the whole process took less than half an hour and assistance was given to the consumer by the Council so that both parties could sign the mediation agreement as soon as possible.
Local resident agrees that the service help
After using the service, local resident Ms. Ng states that the platform enables her to communicate directly with the other party using the network equipment at the Council to save time and get prepared for her claim. Ms. Ng indicates that she has never thought solving a dispute would be so convenient, the service alleviates the inconvenience and worries that consumers face when dealing with cross-border disputes.
More working partners for cross-border mediation and arbitration
With the rapid development of the Greater Bay Area and interaction between residents in Macao and mainland China, the Macao Consumer Council will extend its cross-border mediation and arbitration service to more consumer organizations in China, as well as those overseas. The Council will safeguard consumer rights with more professional, convenient, and efficient measures and bring confidence to tourists travelling to Macao.
