Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture and President of the Macau Grand Prix Organizing Committee (MGPOC) Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, today (November 18) announced that the 65th Macau Grand Prix had been successfully concluded and that the MGPOC will continue to follow the guidelines of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in order to stage an exciting and safe event for the public and competitors.
The 65th Macau Grand Prix was held over for four days, and Dr.Tam noted that the MGPOC had executed a successful event. He added that the event was supported by the FIA, and included three world-renowned World Cups, including the Formula 3 Grand Prix, the Macau GT Cup and WTCR, for a total of six thrilling events.
With regard to the accident during this year’s Formula 3 Grand Prix, Dr.Tam emphasized that the FIA F3 World Cup is an event recognized by the FIA. The measures implemented are in accordance with the guidelines of the FIA Safety Advisor and the team leader. Following the accident, the race was temporarily suspended. After approximately 40 minutes of repairs carried out by staff, the race was able to be resumed. Dr.Tam added that Macao's circuit is 6.2 kilometers long and is world-class and challenging. It attracts drivers from all over the world to come to Macao. In the future, the MGPOC will continue to follow the guidelines of the FIA and take all necessary measures to hold the event.
Mr. Pun Weng Kun, Coordinator of the MGPOC said that the MGPOC had managed the accident process and issued information in accordance with established procedures. Following the accident, the MGPOC sent information to the public and the media as soon as information was confirmed. Mr. Pun emphasized that the facilities and equipment around the track are in line with the guidelines of the FIA or the International Motorcycle Federation. He added that 65 editions of the Macau Grand Prix have been held, and therefore the organizing committee has a mature and systematic procedure.
The Chief Medical Officer of the Macau Grand Prix Dr. Chan Wai Sin said that the accident at Lisboa Bend had resulted in five individuals sustaining injuries; two drivers, two photographers and one track marshal. All of them had been sent to hospital for treatment and were conscious on their way to the hospital. A Japanese driver who was amongst those injured has been discharged. In addition, the motorcycle riders who have been admitted to hospital are in stable condition and are currently recovering.
Mr. Chong Coc Veng, Coordinator of the Sporting Subcommittee, added that the FIA will test the track before each Grand Prix. After the accident in Lisboa Bend, the MGPOC immediately repaired the damage and resumed the race after the FIA checked the track again.
