Conde de S. Januário General Hospital updated the clinical condition of the injured at Macau Grand Prix

Conde de São Januário General Hospital held a press conference to report the latest clinical condition of the injured in the Macau Grand Prix

Conde de São Januário General Hospital held a press conference yesterday (19th November) evening, hosted by the Hospital’s Clinical Director Dr Lei Wai Seng, Chief of Orthopaedics Department Dr Lau Wai Lit and Consultant Orthopaedist Dr Chan Hong Mou, to update the clinical condition of those injured during the Macau Grand Prix.

According to Dr Lei Wai Seng, the 65th Macau Grand Prix Formula 3 crash, which occurred on Sunday, has injured 5 persons of whom were sent to Conde de S. Januário General Hospital. Among them, the 17-year-old German driver Sophia Flöersch was diagnosed with a fracture of the cervical vertebra with obviously compression of the spinal cord. Given advice on the risk of transportation, Flöersch’s family members and team principal agreed for her to undergo the cervical spine fixation surgery in Conde de S. Januário General Hospital. The surgery was completely handled by the medical team of Conde de S. Januário General Hospital, including Dr Lau Wai Lit and Dr Chan Hong Mou. The operation was carried out successfully using minimally invasive techniques, and it lasted 7 hours – longer than the previously expected 4 to 5 hours – as it was necessary to set up neuro-monitoring and to take the patient’s iliac crest as bone graft, and with wake-up test which took around 1 hour in total. At present, the patient shows stable vital signs and is able to move her four extremities freely without any neurological deficit. She is expected to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 weeks for observation.

Regarding the other four injured persons in the accident, the 34-year-old male marshal is a local resident with maxillary bone fracture and facial laceration, after surgical suture, he is now in good condition and is expected to remain hospitalized for observation for 3 to 4 days. The 25-year-old, male, assistant photographer from the Mainland China was suffering from hepatic laceration as a result of collision with solid object, he is in stable condition and surgery is not required, but he will stay in hospital for approximately 7 to 10 days for observation to ensure recovery of the liver. The 23-year-old, Japanese male racing driver sustained no apparent injuries, and was discharged right after examination. The 51-year-old, Japanese male photographer, diagnosed with mild concussion, was admitted to hospital and under observation for one night, he was discharged in improved condition.

In addition, two motorcycle GP riders who were also injured during their race in the Grand Prix remain hospitalized in Conde de São Januário General Hospital. One is the 30-year-old British male rider who was injured and admitted to the hospital on 15th November for lumbar spine fracture, underwent surgery on the same day, now staying in the Orthopaedic Ward with good recovery. The other is the 35-year-old British male rider who was admitted to hospital after a crash on 17th November, suffering from fractures in cervical and thoracic vertebrae, as well as joint dislocation and fracture on his left shoulder; immediate reduction was performed, and fixation of thoracic spine was completed dated 18th November; presently, he is in stable condition and under observation in the Intensive Care Unit; it is expected that the rider will be discharged from ICU and transferred to General Ward the next day.
