Government to review talent import proposal

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, speaks to reporters.

A proposal to attract a greater number of talented individuals from outside Macao to work in the city, would be discussed further by the Talents Development Committee, with more detail to be announced after that, said today the Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On.

Mr Chui clarified that the proposal in its current form did not amount to a regulatory framework. He added that the Government would analyse closely those Macao residency policies relevant to such matters, and noted the talent import topic had generated intense discussion in the community.

In comments to reporters, Mr Chui said the Government had no timetable regarding possible implementation of such measures. It would nonetheless strive to provide soon more details to the community.

The Government welcomed comments and suggestions from the public, he added.

The Chief Executive said talented individuals were a cornerstone of the city’s development. The Government paid great attention to nurturing a greater number of local talented people, and in improving the upward mobility of local employees in the workplace.

The Government noted a number of neighbouring cities had launched policies and measures to attract skilled professionals or otherwise talented people, so as to propel the respective socio-economic development of those cities.

While nurturing the development of a greater number of talented local people, the Government sought to review its own policies regarding attracting talented people from outside Macao, and take note of the proactive measures implemented in neighbouring jurisdictions, in order to maintain Macao’s overall competiveness, said Mr Chui.
