The Macao Museum of Art (MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, holds the exhibition “The Shanghai School of Painting – Collections of the Palace Museum” with an opening ceremony on 18 December 2018 (Tuesday), on the 4th floor of MAM. In order to enhance the public’s knowledge of the Shanghai School of Painting, Xu Tong from the Department of Paintings and Calligraphy of the Palace Museum was specially invited to present a seminar prior to the exhibition on 16 December (Sunday). Admission is free and all are welcome to register.
After the establishment of Shanghai as a trading port in the mid-19th century, a new group of painters emerged in the Shanghai region, known as “the Shanghai School of Painting (Haishang Huapai)” or “Shanghai School (Haipai)”. Members of this school are mainly professional painters, who have adopted more secular and popular styles and themes. The elegance and popularity of these paintings are well received by people from different social levels at that time. This exhibition will feature a total of 90 paintings of the Palace Museum’s collection created by 20 representative artists of Shanghai School(Haipai), such as “The Four Rens”, “The Three Xiongs”, Wu Changshuo, Zhao Zhiqian and Xu Gu. The exhibition comprehensively and systematically presents the artistic characteristics and epochal features of Shanghai School paintings from the aspects of work attribute, inheritance of traditional art and new artistic approaches through three chapters including “Commodity Painting”, “Literati Style” and “New Style of New Time”. Some of the paintings are exhibited for the first time in recent years, the public can appreciate the diverse artistic features of “Shanghai School” from a multi-dimensional perspective.
There are many famous artists in the Shanghai School of Painting, and their works have distinctive characteristics, which make the exhibition more appealing to the public. The MAM will hold two thematic seminars, namely “The Brilliance – centering on Shanghai School of Painting in the Collections of the Palace Museum” conducted by curator Xu Tong from the Department of Paintings and Calligraphy of the Palace Museum, on 16 December 2018 (Sunday), from 3pm to 5pm, at the auditorium of MAM; and “The world of flowers depicted by a slow brush – Appreciation of Wu Changshuo’s paintings” conducted by Deputy Researcher of the Palace Museum, Nie Hui, on 10 March 2019 (Sunday) from 3pm to 5pm, at the auditorium of MAM. The exhibition is jointly organized by the Macao Museum of Art, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and the Palace Museum, in cooperation with the Macao Government Tourism Office, the Macao Foundation and the Macao Daily News. The exhibition is held from 19 December 2018 to 10 March 2019.
During the exhibition period, the Organizers will hold a series of activities and all are welcome to participate. The Macao Museum of Art, located at Avenida Xian Xing Hai, NAPE, is open daily from 10am to 7pm, including public holidays (no admittance after 6:30pm) and closes on Mondays. Admission is free.
