Inauguration of the exhibition “The Shanghai School of Painting – Collections of the Palace Museum”
Organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and the Palace Museum, and co-organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office, Macao Foundation and Macao Daily News, the exhibition “The Shanghai School of Painting – Collections of the Palace Museum” was inaugurated on 18 December 2018, on the 4th floor of MAM, featuring a total of 90 paintings by 20 representative artists of Shanghai School (Haipai). The exhibition runs until 10 March 2019.
The opening ceremony was held in a lively atmosphere and was officiated by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao S.A.R. Government, Alexis Tam Chon Weng; the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR, Shen Beili; the Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R., Wan Sucheng; the Deputy Director of the Palace Museum, Feng Naien; the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government, Mok Ian Ian; the Director of the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government, Lou Pak Sang; the Deputy Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office of the Macao S.A.R. Government, Hoi Io Meng; the Vice-President of the Administrative Committee of the Macao Foundation, Zhong Yi Seabra de Mascarenhas; the Director of Macao Daily News, Lok Po; the President of the Macau Artist Society, Lok Hei; and the Executive Vice President of the Yu Un Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association of Macao, Sio Chun Iun.
“The Shanghai School of Painting” is the 20th large-scale exhibition organized by the Macao Museum of Art in cooperation with the Palace Museum. This exhibition will feature a total of 90 paintings of the Palace Museum’s collection created by 20 representative artists of Shanghai School(Haipai), such as “The Four Rens”, “The Three Xiongs”, Wu Changshuo, Zhao Zhiqian and Xu Gu. The exhibition comprehensively and systematically presents the artistic characteristics and epochal features of Shanghai School paintings from the aspects of work attribute, inheritance of traditional art and new artistic approaches through three chapters including “Commodity Painting”, “Literati Style” and “New Style of New Time”. Some of the paintings are exhibited for the first time in recent years, the public can appreciate the diverse artistic features of “Shanghai School” from a multi-dimensional perspective.
In order to allow the public to experience the exhibition from various perspectives, MAM will hold a series of outreach activities. From 22 December 2018, guided tours will be available on Saturdays, Sundays and in the afternoon on public holidays during the exhibition period. On 10 March 2019, a thematic seminar will be held by the expert from the Palace Museum. In addition, the mini concerts by the Macao Orchestra and Macao Conservatory students, will be held in the exhibition hall on 24 February and 10 March 2019, respectively. The Macao Museum of Art, located at Avenida Xian Xing Hai, NAPE, is open daily from 10am to 7pm, including public holidays (no admittance after 6:30pm) and closes on Mondays. Admission is free.”
