UM to launch five bachelor’s degree programmes

UM will launch five new bachelor’s degree programmes

In line with the Macao SAR government’s policy to build a better Macao by strengthening education and nurturing professionals to meet the needs of society, the University of Macau (UM) in the 2019/2020 academic year will launch five new bachelor’s degree programmes in education, science, precision medicine, big data and business intelligence respectively, to nurture high-calibre professionals who can fulfill the different needs of Macao and contribute to the development of the Greater Bay Area with the latest technologies.

The five new undergraduate programmes are: Bachelor of Science in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics offered by the Faculty of Business Administration, Bachelor of Education in Integrated Science offered by the Faculty of Education, Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences, as well as Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics and Chemistry and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (Statistics and Data Science) offered by the Faculty of Science and Technology. The programmes are now in the process of registration and will be launched officially after they are published in the Official Gazette of the Macao SAR.

Brief information about the new programmes is as follows:

  1. Bachelor of Science in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics: The programme is suitable for secondary school graduates from all streams (arts/science/commerce). Graduates of the programme will be equipped with knowledge and skills in business management, IT application and data analytics, and can pursue a career in business or public sector as business analysts or database developers.
  1. Bachelor of Education in Integrated Science: The programme is structured to provide training in science education by integrating the areas of physics, chemistry, and biology. Its foundation is centered on integrated science with specialisation in physics, chemistry or biology. The goal of the programme is to nurture qualified junior and senior secondary school teachers in Macao. Graduates of the programme will be qualified to become teachers in Macao.
  1. Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics: The programme covers the research and analytical tools of computer science, information technology and statistics in order to help students solve problems using biological data. The objective of the programme is to nurture professionals in bioinformatics. Graduates of the programme can pursue a career in the medical sector related to biomedical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological fields.
  1. Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (Statistics and Data Science): This programme will equip students with solid knowledge in mathematics and professional skills in statistical analysis and data science management, to meet the demand for talent in the field of big data in smart cities. Graduates can pursue a career in statistics, data science, or information technology.
  1. Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics and Chemistry: The programme provides students with a comprehensive training in the foundations of physics and chemistry, with a focus on interdisciplinary applications. The scope of study involves various scientific and engineering disciplines (materials science, environmental science, biomedical science and engineering, electronics, mechanical and manufacturing engineering) as well as issues related to global challenges such as energy production, health and well-being, food safety, and the use of natural resources. Graduates can pursue a career in science, engineering, research, and education-related fields.

UM’s undergraduate programmes will open for entrance examination applications on 3 January. The deadline for application is 18 January.
