Inauguration of the new Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Chan Kai Chon

The new Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), Chan Kai Chon took the oath of office today (22 January) in a ceremony presided over by the President of IC, Mok Ian Ian.

In the inauguration ceremony, Chan thanked the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, and leaders of the IC for their trust and support, and for giving him the opportunity to perform new duties in the cultural sector of Macao. He mentioned that he would actively participate in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative to meet the country’s needs, contributing to strengthen the cultural development opportunities seldom found by Macao. At the same time, he added that he will fully assist the President of IC and work together with his colleagues of the Bureau, making every effort to self-improvement and meeting challenges with wisdom and humility.

Mok Ian Ian expressed her sincere congratulations, considering that the Cultural Affairs Bureau covers a wide range of works, including the promotion of the population’s cultural life, the promotion of reading habits, cultivating cultural and artistic talents and developing arts education. In the future, she will work together with her colleagues of the Bureau in order to continue to promote the cultural development of Macao. As this year marks the 20th Anniversary of Macao’s Handover to China, the 70th Anniversary of Establishment of the People’s Republic of China and the 40th Anniversary of Diplomatic Ties between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Portugal, she pointed out that the Cultural Affairs Bureau will follow the orientations of “promotion, inheritance and establishment of a cultural Macao”, taking opportunities and facing challenges, and drawing the world’s attention to Macao.

Chan Kai Chon served as Director of the Macao Museum of Art since 2017. He obtained a Bachelor degree in Economics at Jinan University, a Master degree in Fine Arts at the Nanjing Normal University and a PhD at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1992, he worked in the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau and served as the Head of the Division of Continuing Education of this Bureau from 1994 to 2003. During his tenure as Director of the Macao Museum of Art, he devoted himself to promoting the development of visual arts and museums and planning various annual art exhibitions. As Vice President, Chan Kai Chon will have the task of supervising the works in the areas of exhibitions and museums, cultural and creative industries and arts education, carrying out the mission of promoting culture and the arts.
