The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, has outlined three initiatives to boost Macao’s contribution to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Greater Bay Area).
Mr Chui issued directives on them during the first meeting – held on Tuesday (29 January) – of Macao’s Working Committee for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Mr Chui noted that the Central Government’s leading group for the development of the Greater Bay Area had already held its first plenary meeting. Following on from that meeting, Macao should work under the guidelines provided by the Central Government and play a more active role and advance its involvement in the city-cluster initiative.
In the first initiative he outlined, Mr Chui asked Committee members to focus more closely on the pursuit of relevant research and the formulation of policies regarding Macao’s participation in the Greater Bay Area. Such policy recommendations should be submitted to the Central Government via the leading group.
Regarding his second initiative, Mr Chui called for promotional effort by the Government to the community – regarding the overall development plan for the Greater Bay Area – once it has been launched by the Central Government.
His third initiative concerned strengthening coordination mechanisms in relation to the Greater Bay Area, in terms of the Government’s cross-departmental effort, and its external communications.
During the meeting, Committee members also reviewed Government work already done to advance Macao’s involvement in the development of the Greater Bay Area. This had included: the updating of Macao’s Five-Year Development Plan; the creation of the Working Committee for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area; the signing of an agreement with the National Development and Reform Commission; and the organisation of a youth forum regarding opportunities created for young people by the Greater Bay Area.
The creation of the Working Committee for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was gazetted in November 2018. The body is responsible for: formulation of short-, medium-, and long-term planning for Macao’s involvement in the city-cluster initiative; conduct of relevant research and formulation of policies regarding Macao’s participation in it; formulation of an annual work proposal and supervision of its implementation; and provision of advice – and issuance of guidance – on events organised in relation to the Greater Bay Area initiative.
Under an Executive Order related to the role of the Committee, it has a task group for advancement of innovation, science and technology and smart-city efforts.
