Two teams from the University of Macau’ (UM) English Debating Team recently participated in the Thailand Debate Open 2019 held in Bangkok. Both teams made it to the final stage and one of the teams reached the quarter-final. This year’s event attracted debating teams from Peking University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Taylor’s University in Malaysia, SolBridge International School of Business in South Korea, and Chulalongkorn University in Thailand.
Team UM-A advanced to the quarter-final. The team was formed by Tristan Li Kun, a fourth-year student from the Faculty of Social Science (FSS) and a member of Lui Che Woo College (LCWC); Kelly Zhang Yi, a third-year student from the Faculty of Business Administration and a member of Moon Chun Memorial College; and Garrett Li Jia Neng, a second-year master’s student from the FSS. The team was ultimately ranked No 7 in the tournament. Three members of the team were ranked among the top 20 debaters of all the 160 participants in the tournament.
Team UM-B reached the final stage with a ranking of No 11 in the tournament. The team was formed by Alisa Wan Yingjia, a second-year student from the Faculty of Education and a member of Cheong Kun Lun College; Lau Kak Chi, a second-year student from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) and a member of Shiu Pong College (SPC); Emon Zhou Yong Yi, a second-year student from the FSS and a member of LCWC. Sandra Dai Ying Hang, a second-year student from the FSS and a member of SPC, and Marco San Pedro Lalicon, a third-year student from the FAH and a member of Stanley Ho East Asia College, represented UM as adjudicators in the preliminary rounds.
