Transport and communications statistics for January 2019


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that, as at end-January 2019, total number of licensed motor vehicles amounted to 240,598, similar to that of a year earlier; light motorcycles (26,094) dropped by 9.4%, whereas light automobiles (108,757) and heavy motorcycles (98,132) rose by 1.4% and 1.3% respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in January declined by 28.0% year-on-year to 1,228, with heavy motorcycles (642) and light automobiles (538) falling by 24.6% and 28.8% respectively. Number of traffic accidents decreased by 25.1% year-on-year to 934, involving 299 victims and 1 of them was killed.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in January grew by 8.5% year-on-year to 457,090 trips, of which number of vehicular trips passing through the Border Gate edged up by 0.3% to 298,639. Meanwhile, there were 139,366 trips going through the Checkpoint of Cotai, up by 16.3%, and 15,769 trips crossing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Commercial flights at the Macau International Airport totalled 5,750 trips, up by 14.2% year-on-year; trips to and from Mainland China increased by 25.0% to 2,297, whereas those to and from Taiwan dropped by 3.8% to 1,089.

Gross weight of containerized cargo by land soared by 86.1% year-on-year to 2,300 tonnes, and that of seaborne containerized cargo grew by 17.3% to 16,266 tonnes. Seaborne container throughput amounted to 12,869 TEU, equivalent to 8,713 containers handled, up by 5.6% and 4.4% respectively. The Macau International Airport handled 3,584 tonnes of air cargo, a growth of 3.7% year-on-year, of which gross weight of outward cargo (2,592 tonnes) rose by 16.3%, while that of transit cargo (420 tonnes) declined by 34.2%.

As at the end of January 2019, there were 123,407 fixed-line telephone subscribers and 2,127,823 mobile phone subscribers, down by 5.6% and 6.7% respectively year-on-year. Internet subscribers rose by 6.6% to 546,700 and the duration of internet usage in January reached 121 million hours, an increase of 11.4% year-on-year.
