With the promulgation of the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area”, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) organised a series of activities for “Careers Day 2019” which encouraged the students to participate in the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. There were 58 participating organisations, more than 2,000 job vacancies were offered by the organisations, and 17 career talks were held. The activities attracted more than 1,500 potential graduates and currently registered students. According to a recent survey, 90% of MPI’s graduates could secure employment within slightly more than one month after graduation and more than 10% of graduates are in management positions. The quality and overall performance of the graduates are positively acknowledged by the hiring organisations.
The opening ceremony of “Careers Day 2019” was held at 11:00 am on February 21st at the Macao Polytechnic Institute. The representatives of 58 participating organisations were present at the ceremony. Vice-President of MPI, Lei Ngan Lin mentioned that the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” emphasises the positioning of Macao as a platform for economic and trade cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and as a world centre of tourism and leisure. MPI will actively cooperate to promote the development and cooperation on education in the Greater Bay Area, and bring the competitive advantages of Portuguese language teaching, information technology, gaming management, gaming, and cultural and creative industry in cultivating all kinds of talents needed in a new form of interdisciplinary and innovative technology for the development of Macao and the Bay Area. In recent years, MPI has organised several internship programmes, company visits, entrepreneurship seminars, and experience sharing in the Bay Area to enable students to experience, discover and grasp new opportunities in today’s era and integrate into the long-term development of the Bay Area. The MPI will also offer Master’s and Doctoral programmes in key disciplines to serve the Macao community and Bay Area with a higher level of talent development.
Vice-President Lei also mentioned that MPI adheres to the high standards in educational quality. MPI is the first higher education institution in Asia to have obtained the authoritative assurance from the international quality assurance agency for higher education, as well as being awarded the “National Teaching Achievement Award 2018” by the State Council. The national teaching achievement awarded to MPI is the first and only higher education institution awarding in Macao. Nearly 20,000 of MPI’s graduates have been trained in the fields of Chinese-Portuguese translation, information technology, gaming management, cultural and creative industry, public administration, business administration, health care and sports. According to MPI’s latest “Graduate Survey Report”, 90% of its graduates could secure employment, on average, within slightly more than one month after graduation, receiving an average salary of MOP$16,676; over 70% of its graduates took up employment in the fields of their study, and more than 10% of graduates are in management positions. 12.2% of its graduates chose to have further study at well-known universities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Portugal, mainland China and Hong Kong.
Zhuhai Hengqin New Area Elites Human Resource Service Co., Ltd, which is firstly participating in the careers day, is an enterprise solely funded by the State providing human resources services for Greater Bay Area government departments, central enterprises and technopreneurship companies. Mr. Chen, the representative of the company, said that the students of MPI had internships in the company and had excellent performance. Therefore, he would like to attract more talents to settle in the Bay Area through the participation in the careers day. Mr. Cheong, the representative of Barra Studio, wants to convey the entrepreneurial opportunity of the Greater Bay Area to MPI students through the entrepreneurial seminar. He also introduced the achievements of the company focusing on 3D modeling and AR interactive design, and hoped that the outstanding students from the MPI design programme and computing programme would join the technopreneurship and design industry in the Bay Area.
The careers day has attracted many potential graduates and current students to consult and register on-site. Mr. Kuok, the potential graduate of Computing programme in Enterprise Information Systems, hoped to join banking or gaming companies after graduation to apply his expertise into work, to support the company’s business processes, decision making, and competitive advantage strategies and so on. Year 3 student Lei from E-Commerce programme mentioned that he had participated in the internship organised by MPI in the Greater Bay Area for two consecutive years. He experienced the great development potential and vitality of the Bay Area in the Hengqin internship last summer and he hopes to have opportunity to take part in the technopreneurship industry in the Bay Area after his graduation, as a builder of a first-class Greater Bay Area.
The organiser, the Student Affairs Office of MPI, said that it is important for the undergraduate students to understand that the social development and market demand is crucial for their career planning. Through the series of activities for “Careers Day 2019”, the platform has provided the opportunities for face-to-face interaction between students and representatives of organisations, and also provided more information and improved the recognition of the long-term development of the Bay Area. While the outline of the Bay Area promulgated, the organiser expected the students to take advantage of the new opportunities, and play their own advantages in the diversified planning and construction to contribute to the development of the country and Macao.
