Results of survey on manpower needs and wages for the 4th quarter of 2018 – Gaming sector


The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) released survey results of Manpower Needs and Wages of the Gaming Sector for the fourth quarter of 2018. Survey coverage excludes junket promoters and junket associates.

At the end of the fourth quarter of 2018, number of full-time employees in the Gaming Sector increased by 1.1% year-on-year to 57,246, with number of dealers rising by 1.1% to 24,719.

In December 2018, average earnings (excluding bonuses) of full-time employees in the Gaming Sector were MOP23,740, up by 3.5% year-on-year. Average earnings of dealers increased by 3.0% to MOP20,450.

Job vacancies totalled 1,321 at the end of the fourth quarter of 2018, up by 861 year-on-year. Most of the vacancies (51.8%) were for clerks, including 445 vacancies for dealers.

In terms of recruitment prerequisites, merely 34.3% of the vacancies required work experience while 80.9% required senior secondary education or lower; requirement for knowledge of Mandarin and English accounted for 76.5% and 36.5% of the total respectively.

In the fourth quarter of 2018, a total of 1,737 new employees were hired, up by 14.4% from 1,518 in the same quarter of 2017. The employee recruitment rate (3.0%) and the job vacancy rate (2.3%) rose by 0.3 percentage points and 1.5 percentage points respectively year-on-year. These indicators reflect an increase in demand for manpower in the Gaming Sector.

As regards vocational training, the Gaming Sector had 83,264 participants attending training courses provided by the enterprise (including courses organised by the enterprise or in conjunction with other institutions, and those sponsored by the enterprise), a year-on-year decrease of 19.5%. Most of the participants attended courses in Business & Administration (70.4%), followed by Gaming & Entertainment Services courses (17.5%). The majority of the courses were organised by the gaming enterprises, and the number of participants accounted for 99.5% of the total.
