Transport and communications statistics for February 2019


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that, as at end-February 2019, total number of licensed motor vehicles was 239,345, down slightly by 0.4% year-on-year; light motorcycles (25,647) dropped by 10.3% whereas light automobiles (108,262) and heavy motorcycles (97,894) rose by 1.0% and 1.2% respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in February declined by 36.9% year-on-year to 726, with heavy motorcycles (410) and light automobiles (282) falling by 31.9% and 40.6% respectively. In the first two months of 2019, new registration of motor vehicles decreased by 31.6% year-on-year to 1,954. Number of traffic accidents increased by 3.6% year-on-year to 1,153, and number of injuries totalled 410. A total of 709 traffic casualties were recorded in the first two months, and 1 of them was killed.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in February grew by 3.1% year-on-year to 373,553 trips, with 19,691 trips crossing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge; meanwhile, those going through the Border Gate (237,279) saw a decrease of 4.8%. In the first two months, cross-border vehicular traffic rose by 6.0% year-on-year to 830,643 trips. Commercial flights at the Macau International Airport totalled 5,587 trips, up by 16.1% year-on-year; trips to and from Mainland China (2,256) and Thailand (590) showed respective growth of 27.2% and 24.2%, whereas those to and from Taiwan (1,054) dropped by 2.2%. Commercial flights in the first two months increased by 15.1% year-on-year to 11,337 trips.

Gross weight of containerized cargo by land in February decreased by 3.5% year-on-year to 880 tonnes, of which cargo passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai fell by 7.4% to 798 tonnes. Gross weight of seaborne containerized cargo dropped by 19.3% year-on-year to 8,032 tonnes, with 4,449 tonnes of cargo being handled at the Inner Harbour, down by 18.0%; seaborne container throughput amounted to 8,099 TEU, equivalent to 5,474 containers handled, down by 9.7% and 10.9% respectively. In the first two months, gross weight of containerized cargo by land surged by 48.1% year-on-year to 3,180 tonnes, and that of seaborne containerized cargo grew by 2.0% to 24,298 tonnes; meanwhile, seaborne container throughput edged down by 0.9% year-on-year to 20,968 TEU, equivalent to 14,187 containers handled, a decrease of 2.1%.

The Macau International Airport handled 1,484 tonnes of air cargo in February, a decline of 23.8% year-on-year; gross weight of inward cargo (435 tonnes) and outward cargo (855 tonnes) fell by 20.3% and 19.5% respectively. Moreover, gross weight of transit cargo (195 tonnes) plunged by 42.9%. In the first two months, air cargo dropped by 6.2% year-on-year to 5,068 tonnes.

As at the end of February 2019, there were 122,983 fixed-line telephone subscribers and 2,150,763 mobile phone subscribers, down by 5.7% and 6.7% respectively year-on-year. Internet subscribers rose by 6.3% to 549,235 and the duration of internet usage in February reached 127 million hours, an increase of 26.7% year-on-year. The duration of usage stood at 248 million hours in the first two months, up by 18.7%.
