Exhibition “Beauty in the New Era: Masterpieces from the Collection of the National Art Museum of China” opens at Macao Museum of Art on 3 May (Friday)

Organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM, from the Portuguese acronym), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC), the exhibition “Beauty in the New Era: Masterpieces from the Collection of the National Art Museum of China”, will open on 3 May 2019, at 6:30pm, on the 4th floor of the MAM, featuring nearly 90 works by various masters from the collection of the National Art Museum of China, aiming to fully present the development of Chinese fine arts over the past hundred years. A thematic lecture will also be held in the evening of 2 May 2019. All are welcome to participate.

The National Art Museum of China is the most prestigious of fine arts' museum in China. This exhibition, themed “Beauty in the New Era”, which denotes “classics in the new era”, reflects the national character and the connotation of time through Chinese fine art classics that are embedded with remarkable thought and wisdom. The exhibition is divided into two sections, namely “Nourishing Chinese Art with Western Aesthetics” and “Innovating Tradition”, presenting the artistic style and achievements of the Chinese masters. The former features a selection of works by seven painting masters, namely Xu Beihong, Lin Fengmian, Liu Haisu, Pang Xunqin, Yan Wenliang, Wu Zuoren and Wu Guanzhong. They created a modern new look for Chinese arts with their unique mixture of Chinese and Western techniques, trailblazing the establishment of a Chinese modern art form and school have influenced the development of Chinese arts over a century. The latter showcases a selection of Chinese paintings by seven great painters, including Qi Baishi, Huang Binhong, Zhang Daqian, Pan Tianshou, Fu Baoshi, Li Keran and Ye Qianyu. Based on tradition with a gradual progress, these artists successfully reformed aesthetic languages within the traditional framework, promoting the contemporary transformation and innovative development of traditional Chinese arts.

In order to allow the public to have a better understanding of the masterpieces and experience the new era from the perspective of the arts, the MAM will hold a thematic lecture “The Masters’ Era”, conducted by the Deputy Director of the Collection Department of the National Art Museum of China in Mandarin, on 2 May (Thursday), at 7pm, at the Auditorium of MAM. The exhibition “Beauty in the New Era”, part of the programmes of the “Art Macao” and the 30th Macao Arts Festival, will be held until 28 July. The Macao Museum of Art, located at Avenida Xian Xing Hai, NAPE, is open daily from 10am to 7pm (no admittance after 6:30pm) including public holidays and closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
