The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) conducted an estimation of the economic losses caused by Typhoon Mangkhut after it struck Macao on 16 September 2018. The preliminary estimates of last year indicated that the economic losses caused by Mangkhut to Macao amounted to MOP 1.55 billion, comprising MOP 0.52 billion of direct losses and MOP 1.03 billion of indirect losses.
Following the preliminary estimation, DSEC sent questionnaires to relevant government entities to collect data on direct losses caused by the typhoon to the institutions and facilities under their management to derive a more accurate estimation of the economic losses. In addition, DSEC reassessed the indirect losses of different industries due to the typhoon based on the latest available economic statistics.
After consolidation of the up-to-date data, the revised estimate of the economic losses caused by Typhoon Mangkhut to Macao was MOP 1.74 billion (MOP 0.19 billion higher than the preliminary estimate), including MOP 0.69 billion of direct losses and MOP 1.05 billion of indirect losses.
