CE: Infrastructure forum fosters Macao’s contributions to ‘Belt and Road’

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, meets with officiating guests of the 10th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum.

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, said Macao was dedicated to enhancing its role in terms of bolstering international cooperation regarding infrastructure development and facilities construction serving the countries and places covered by the “Belt and Road” initiative.

Mr Chui made the comments today as he met with approximately 50 people who are in Macao as officiating guests for the 10th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum.

The meeting was held prior to the opening of the Forum. In remarks delivered at the opening ceremony, Mr Chui said that with support from the Central Government and concerted effort from parties involved, the Forum had become an important platform for Macao to foster its contribution to the “Belt and Road” initiative.

The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao act as advisors to the Forum. The two-day event is being held under the theme “Promoting Quality and Sustainable Development of International Infrastructure”.

Mr Chui told the guests in Thursday’s meeting that this edition sought to complement goals envisaged under the outline development plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Greater Bay Area); and to promote the achievements of the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, held in April in Beijing.

The Chief Executive went on to say the Forum also aimed to explore how to enhance infrastructure connectivity within the Greater Bay Area, and optimise high-quality and sustainable development of infrastructure for the countries and places covered by the “Belt and Road” initiative.

Also attending the meeting was Vice Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Wang Bingnan. He affirmed the Forum’s important functions and influence in terms of facilitating infrastructure development internationally and among the countries and places covered by the “Belt and Road” initiative.

Mr Wang pledged the Ministry’s support for Macao to develop its MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) industry.

Officials present at the meeting included: the Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR, Ms Shen Beili; the Secretary for Economy and Finance of the Macao SAR, Mr Leong Vai Tac; the Vice President of the Legislative Assembly, Mr Chui Sai Cheong; member of the Executive Council and member of the Mainland China-Macao Belt and Road Business and Professional Services Council, Mr Ma Iao Lai; and the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms O Lam.

The International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum is an international gathering taking as its theme investment in, and construction of, infrastructure. The Forum serves as an important platform for exchange of strategic thinking and insights, for exploration of opportunities and for seeking cooperation.

The Forum was established in 2010 by the China International Contractors Association with the approval of China’s Ministry of Commerce. The Forum was first staged in Macao in 2012, and this is the seventh consecutive year that it has successfully been held in the SAR.
