Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles totalled 238,289 as at end-April, down by 176 year-on-year; light motorcycles (25,027) dropped by 9.8% whereas light automobiles (107,882) and heavy motorcycles (97,889) rose by 1.0% and 1.8% respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in April declined by 26.1% year-on-year to 906, with heavy motorcycles (481) and light automobiles (385) falling by 24.1% and 27.8% respectively. In the first four months of 2019, new registration of motor vehicles decreased by 25.7% year-on-year to 4,000. Number of traffic accidents dropped by 9.6% year-on-year to 932 in April, involving 338 victims and 1 of them was killed. In the first four months, there were 4,116 traffic accidents and 1,428 traffic casualties.
Cross-border vehicular traffic in April grew by 7.2% year-on-year to 434,445 trips. Vehicular trips passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai (126,735) rose by 3.6%, whereas those going through the Border Gate (277,146) dropped slightly by 0.8%; besides, there were 27,327 trips crossing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. In the first four months of 2019, cross-border vehicular traffic rose by 6.4% year-on-year to 1,707,867 trips. Commercial flights at the Macau International Airport totalled 6,081 trips in April, up by 21.4% year-on-year; trips to and from Mainland China (2,609) and Taiwan (1,088) saw increases of 36.3% and 4.9% respectively. Inbound and outbound commercial flights in the first four months grew by 17.7% year-on-year to 23,345 trips.
Gross weight of containerized cargo by land in April leapt by 63.0% year-on-year to 1,370 tonnes, and all of which passed through the Checkpoint of Cotai, bringing an upsurge of 74.3% in the gross weight of containerized cargo handled at that checkpoint. Inward and outward laden containers by land amounted to 263, up remarkably by 66.5%. In the first four months, gross weight of containerized cargo by land surged by 50.6% year-on-year to 5,974 tonnes, with laden containers rising by 20.5% to 875.
Gross weight of seaborne containerized cargo dropped by 6.5% year-on-year to 11,540 tonnes in April, with cargo being handled at the Inner Harbour (6,056 tonnes) decreasing by 1.0%; seaborne laden container throughput totalled 7,586 TEU, equivalent to 5,111 containers handled, up by 2.9% and 3.5% respectively. In the first four months, gross weight of seaborne containerized cargo decreased by 3.2% to 48,967 tonnes; seaborne laden container throughput dropped by 2.9% year-on-year to 29,235 TEU, equivalent to 19,632 containers handled, down by 2.7%.
The Macau International Airport handled 3,474 tonnes of air cargo in April, a decrease of 10.0% year-on-year; gross weight of outward cargo (2,440 tonnes) and transit cargo (426 tonnes) fell by 8.2% and 35.7% respectively, whereas that of inward cargo (607 tonnes) grew by 12.7%. In the first four months, air cargo dropped by 4.3% year-on-year to 12,121 tonnes.
As at the end of April 2019, there were 121,681 fixed-line telephone subscribers and 2,144,662 mobile phone subscribers, down by 6.0% and 9.3% respectively year-on-year. Internet subscribers rose by 6.3% to 556,443 and the duration of internet usage in April grew by 30.9% to 134 million hours. Total duration of usage amounted to 509 million hours in the first four months, an increase of 23.7% year-on-year.
