Credit card statistics –2nd quarter 2019


According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, the total number of personal credit cards issued by banks in Macao continued to rise in the second quarter of 2019. Both the credit card turnover and total repayments also registered growth from a year earlier.

Cards issued

On the back of the increasing dual-currency and triple-currency cards, the total number of personal credit cards issued by banks in Macao stood at 1,363,242 at end-June 2019, equivalent to an increase of 2.0% over the previous quarter or 9.6% from a year ago. The numbers of pataca (MOP) cards, Hong Kong dollar (HKD) cards and renminbi (RMB) cards advanced year-on-year by 8.9% (to 957,117), 5.5% (to 95,205) and 13.2% (to 310,920) respectively.

Credit limit granted and delinquency

At end-June 2019, credit card credit limit granted by banks in Macao reached MOP38.1 billion, up 2.3% from end-March 2019 or 26.3% from end-June 2018. Credit card receivables amounted to MOP2.8 billion, of which the rollover amount totalled MOP849.9 million, representing 30.8% of credit card receivables. The delinquency ratio, i.e. the ratio of delinquent amount overdue for more than three months to credit card receivables, dropped 0.04 percentage points to 1.61% when compared with the previous reporting period.

Turnover and repayment

For the second quarter of 2019, the credit card turnover totalled MOP5.8 billion, equivalent to a rise of 2.5% quarter-to-quarter or 6.4% year-on-year. The cash advance turnover was MOP219.9 million, occupying 3.8% of total credit card turnover. Credit card repayments, in which payments for interest and fees are included, dropped 5.9% from the previous quarter but rose 5.7% from the same period last year to MOP5.7 billion.
