Transport and communications statistics for June 2019


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles totalled 238,003 as at end-June 2019, down slightly by 0.1% year-on-year; light motorcycles (24,645) dropped by 9.3% while light automobiles (107,981) and heavy motorcycles (97,907) increased by 0.8% and 1.8% respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in June decreased by 21.2% year-on-year to 827, with heavy motorcycles (433) and light automobiles (359) falling by 15.6% and 25.1% respectively. In the first half year of 2019, new registration of motor vehicles fell by 23.8% year-on-year to 5,714. Number of traffic accidents declined by 24.0% year-on-year to 979 in June, and number of injuries totalled 316. In the first half year, there were 6,170 traffic accidents; number of victims totalled 2,115 and 5 of them were killed.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in June grew by 9.7% year-on-year to 441,430 trips. Vehicular trips passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai (127,885) rose by 7.4%, whereas those going through the Border Gate (278,063) inched down by 0.7%; besides, there were 32,530 trips crossing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. In the first half year of 2019, cross-border vehicular traffic increased by 7.5% year-on-year to 2,605,003 trips. Commercial flights at the Macau International Airport totalled 6,042 trips in June, up by 22.0% year-on-year; trips to and from mainland China (2,661) and Taiwan (1,023) saw respective increases of 39.7% and 7.3%. Inbound and outbound commercial flights in the first half year grew by 19.4% year-on-year to 35,632 trips.

Gross weight of containerized cargo by land in June fell by 4.7% year-on-year to 1,479 tonnes, of which cargo passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai went down by 3.9% to 1,424 tonnes. In the first half year, gross weight of containerized cargo by land increased by 21.6% year-on-year to 8,823 tonnes, and laden containers surged by 37.0% to 1,560.

Gross weight of port containerized cargo dropped by 18.1% year-on-year to 12,557 tonnes in June, with cargo being handled at the Inner Harbour (6,782 tonnes) falling by 14.1%; meanwhile, port laden container throughput totalled 7,521 TEU, equivalent to 5,055 containers handled, down by 4.0% and 4.4% respectively. In the first half year, gross weight of port containerized cargo reduced by 7.3% year-on-year to 74,610 tonnes; port laden container throughput decreased by 2.4% to 45,108 TEU, equivalent to 30,294 containers handled, down by 2.2%.

The Macau International Airport handled 3,135 tonnes of air cargo in June, an increase of 10.2% year-on-year; gross weight of outward cargo (2,209 tonnes) surged by 29.7%, whereas that of inward cargo (543 tonnes) and transit cargo (384 tonnes) went down by 11.8% and 27.1% respectively. In the first half year, air cargo fell by 3.0% year-on-year to 18,375 tonnes.

As at the end of June 2019, there were 120,285 fixed-line telephone subscribers and 2,121,877 mobile phone subscribers, down by 6.1% and 11.0% respectively year-on-year. Internet subscribers rose by 7.0% to 561,731 and the duration of internet usage in June increased by 28.4% to 131 million hours. Total duration of usage amounted to 772 million hours in the first half year, a growth of 25.2% year-on-year.
