Demographic statistics for the 2nd quarter of 2019


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population was 672,000 as at end-June 2019, an increase of 1,100 quarter-to-quarter; female population (357,500) accounted for 53.2% of the total.

A total of 1,400 live births were delivered in the second quarter of 2019, a decrease of 75 quarter-to-quarter. Male babies totalled 735 and the sex ratio at birth stood at 110.5, corresponding to 110.5 male babies per 100 female babies. In the first half of 2019, a total of 2,875 live births were recorded, up by 20 year-on-year.

Mortality decreased by 73 quarter-to-quarter to 542 in the second quarter. The top three underlying causes of death were Neoplasms (194), Diseases of the Circulatory System (150) and Diseases of the Respiratory System (87). In the first half of 2019, mortality increased by 158 year-on-year to 1,157.

In the second quarter of 2019, Chinese immigrants (647) decreased by 630 quarter-to-quarter, whereas individuals granted right of abode (285) and non-resident workers at end-period (190,367) increased by 119 and 852 respectively.

A total of 841 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the second quarter, down by 291 quarter-to-quarter. In the first half of 2019, there were 1,973 cases of marriage registration, down by 162 year-on-year.
