Transport and communications statistics for July 2019


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles totalled 238,383 as at end-July 2019, up slightly by 152 year-on-year; light automobiles (108,258) and heavy motorcycles (98,136) increased by 0.9% and 1.8% respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in July went up by 0.8% year-on-year to 1,130, with light automobiles (537) rising by 1.1%, while heavy motorcycles (537) edging down by 0.4%. In the first seven months of 2019, new registration of motor vehicles declined by 20.6% year-on-year to 6,844. Number of traffic accidents grew by 8.0% year-on-year to 1,167 in July, and number of injuries totalled 327. In the first seven months, there were 7,337 traffic accidents; number of victims totalled 2,442 and 5 of them were killed.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in July grew by 9.4% year-on-year to 454,059 trips. Vehicular trips passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai (139,350) rose by 7.5%, whereas those going through the Border Gate (277,053) dropped by 1.8%; besides, there were 34,393 trips crossing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. In the first seven months of 2019, cross-border vehicular traffic increased by 7.8% year-on-year to 3,059,062 trips. Commercial flights at the Macau International Airport totalled 6,483 trips in July, up by 19.5% year-on-year; trips to and from mainland China (2,736) and Taiwan (1,134) showed respective increases of 32.4% and 0.7%. Inbound and outbound commercial flights in the first seven months grew by 19.4% year-on-year to 42,115 trips.

Gross weight of containerized cargo by land in July soared by 48.7% year-on-year to 1,592 tonnes, of which cargo passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai surged by 44.4% to 1,484 tonnes. Meanwhile, gross weight of port containerized cargo decreased by 2.1% to 13,464 tonnes, with cargo being handled at the Ká-Hó Harbour (5,609 tonnes) dropping by 13.6% whereas thatbeing shippedthrough the Inner Harbour (7,855 tonnes) rising by 8.2%. In the first seven months, gross weight of containerized cargo by land expanded by 30.1% year-on-year to 10,833 tonnes, while that of port containerized cargo fell by 6.3% to 88,308 tonnes.

The Macau International Airport handled 3,272 tonnes of air cargo in July, an increase of 5.3% year-on-year; gross weight of outward cargo (2,229 tonnes) rose by 16.0%, while that of inward cargo (591 tonnes) and transit cargo (453 tonnes) decreased by 9.2% and 15.5% respectively. In the first seven months, air cargo went down by 1.9% year-on-year to 21,647 tonnes.

As at the end of July 2019, there were 119,436 fixed-line telephone subscribers and 2,091,777 mobile phone subscribers, down by 6.3% and 10.3% respectively year-on-year. Internet subscribers increased by 7.0% to 565,045.
