Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitor arrivals totalled 2,764,924 in September 2019, up by 8.0% year-on-year; same-day visitors (1,388,301) surged by 20.4% while overnight visitors (1,376,623) dropped by 2.3%. As the proportion of same-day visitors expanded by 5.2 percentage points year-on-year to 50.2%, the average length of stay of visitors shortened by 0.1 day to 1.3 days, with that of overnight visitors (2.4 days) and same-day visitors (0.2 day) remaining unchanged.
Visitors from mainland China went up by 5.7% year-on-year to 1,924,490, with 49.0% of them coming from Guangdong Province (942,089); mainland visitors travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (795,990) increased by 1.0%. Visitors from Hong Kong (564,771) and Taiwan (88,327) grew by 27.2% and 6.4% respectively, whereas those from the Republic of Korea (41,590) fell by 28.6%. Meanwhile, visitors from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area jumped by 36.0% year-on-year to 854,988; those coming from Zhuhai (269,327) and Guangzhou (167,936) soared by 49.9% and 26.8% respectively.
Analysed by mode of transport, visitor arrivals by land surged by 32.5% year-on-year to 2,053,534 in September; among them, 1,548,747 (+14.7%) arrived through the Border Gate and 287,362 via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Visitor arrivals by air rose by 16.3% year-on-year to 294,677, while those by sea declined by 45.0% to 416,713.
In the first three quarters of 2019, visitor arrivals reached 30,202,906, a growth of 17.0% year-on-year. Same-day visitors (15,929,175) and overnight visitors (14,273,731) increased by 30.6% and 4.9% respectively. The average length of stay of visitors reduced by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.2 days, with that of overnight visitors (2.2 days) and same-day visitors (0.2 day) remaining stable. Analysed by country/place, visitors from mainland China (21,455,294), the Republic of Korea (609,833), Hong Kong (5,560,117) and Taiwan (815,838) rose by 17.7%, 0.4%, 22.3% and 1.5% respectively. Visitors from the United States (151,518), Australia (64,475), Canada (55,379) and the United Kingdom (44,201) also recorded year-on-year growth.
