CE in Beijing to discuss advancement of Greater Bay Area

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today said the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government was sparing no effort in studying ways to resolve difficulties over regulations of respective jurisdictions comprising the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Greater Bay Area).

Mr Chui made the remarks in Beijing during this afternoon’s meeting of the leading group for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The meeting, held at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in the capital, was chaired by Vice Premier of the State Council, Mr Han Zheng.

Speaking in the meeting, Mr Chui said the work of the Macao SAR Government – in relation to promotion of the city-cluster initiative to the Macao community; and to implementation in 2019 of documented major goals designed to advance the initiative – had already registered achievements.

Macao would dedicate further effort to advance development of the Greater Bay Area, as well as to foster connections with other Greater Bay Area partners, stressed Mr Chui.

In his address, Mr Chui mentioned the publication of an annexe to the city’s Five-Year Development Plan. It sought to complement the city’s work plan so that it encompassed goals and tasks defined for Macao in the outline development plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Mr Chui additionally stated that the Macao SAR Government had stepped up effort to promote within the local community the blueprint of the city-cluster initiative and information about the distinctive strengths of each Greater Bay Area city. These efforts were aimed at encouraging more Macao residents to integrate their endeavours within the Greater Bay Area framework.

The Central Government’s measures – in relation to supporting Macao residents either working, studying, starting a business or engaging in other development in the Greater Bay Area – had created new impetus for Macao to contribute to the city-cluster initiative, added Mr Chui.

The Chief Executive pointed out that his administration would strive to ensure a smooth transition of civic leadership to the new Government team, with a view to pressing ahead with existing plans and work.

During the meeting, Mr Chui presented specifics of the Macao SAR Government’s expected contribution toward development of the Greater Bay Area, including: annual major tasks outlined by the Central Government; adequate diversification of the city’s economy; exploration of innovative policymaking with regard to the city-cluster initiative; and proactive involvement in the plan to build up the Greater Bay Area as an international centre of science and technology innovation.

The leading group for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was formed in 2018. Since the leading group’s establishment, the Central Government has put forth a number of measures supporting Macao’s participation in the Greater Bay Area initiative.

Those measures covered topics including: development of science, technology and innovation; support for the city’s traditional Chinese medicine sector; facilitation in communication technology; support for Macao residents either starting a business or seeking employment in other Greater Bay Area cities; taxation matters; and facilitation of frequent exchanges within the Greater Bay Area in relation to people and goods.
