The University of Macau (UM) held the Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2019 today (13 November). During the ceremony, the university presented scholarships and academic prizes to 235 outstanding students. More than 400 UM students received scholarships in the past year.
In his speech, Rector Yonghua Song congratulated the scholarship recipients and thanked the scholarship donors. He said that the release of the Outline of the Strategies for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) signified the official start of the development of the GBA, which would provide many new opportunities for Macao’s higher education sector. According to Song, in addition to enhancing its teaching and research capacity, UM must integrate with the GBA and align its development with the overall development strategies of the nation and the Macao SAR government. The university should collaborate with educational institutions and companies in the GBA, nurture professionals in various fields, establish an industry-academia collaboration base, promote technology transfer, and join alliances for academic exchange. Such collaboration will help create a better teaching and learning environment for faculty members and students, a larger platform for students to put their knowledge and skills into practice, and enhance the international competitiveness of higher education in Macao. Song hopes that with increased resources, more students will benefit, as more resources will enable students to concentrate on their studies, set bigger goals, and put their skills into practice.
Zheng Jiayi, a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Business Administration and a member of Lui Che Woo College, says that the scholarship is an encouragement to her and represents recognition of her efforts. She thinks that UM devotes many resources to nurturing students to help them achieve well-rounded development and contribute to society.
In the 2018/2019 academic year, UM received a total of MOP 4 million in academic prizes and scholarships from more than 50 institutions and individuals. These academic prizes and scholarships were awarded to students at the university’s major events, including the scholarship presentation ceremony and the convocation ceremony.
