The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and the Office for Personal Data Protection jointly organized the “Personal Data Protection Act” Seminar. In tandem with the continuous objective to publicize and promote the Personal Data Protection Act, the seminar prompted tourism industry professionals to be aware of personal data protection and adopt effective preventive measures when dealing with personal data of residents and visitors, raising awareness of the pertinent rights across the industry.
The seminar was held at World Trade Centre Macau today (21 November). MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, MGTO Deputy Director Cheng Wai Tong, Deputy Coordinator of the Office for Personal Data Protection, Iao Hin Chit, and Head of MGTO Training and Quality Management Department, Doris Leong, attended the seminar together with representatives of the industry. The major audience of the seminar were tourism industry professionals including those from the workforce of the hotel, catering and retail industries, travel agencies and licensed tour guides, who signed up for participation enthusiastically. The seminar engaged over 300 participants.
MGTO Director Senna Fernandes remarked in her speech that growing a consensus on the endeavor for personal data protection among industry professionals is one of the major steps to push forward quality tourism. She expressed hope that the seminar can encourage industry professionals to integrate a deep awareness of personal data protection with their day-to-day work culture. In doing so, they can continue to optimize their service quality and contribute to reinforcement of Macao’s branding as an international tourist city, as well as propelling Macao’s development into a city ideal for living and travel.
At the seminar, Functional Head of the Office for Personal Data Protection, Chong Sut I, introduced the major content of the Personal Data Protection Act, including the scope of application, fundamental definitions, rights of data subjects, matters for concern when processing personal data as well as legal liability for infringement of the Personal Data Protection Act, among other information. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the pertinent legal regulations in Macao, as well as how to protect and handle personal data correctly. The speaker also led a discussion and analysis on the potential issues and cases encountered by industry professionals when handling personal data in daily work, besides answering participants’ enquiries about processing and use of personal data.
MGTO continues to organize training sessions, seminars and workshops tailored for tourism and related industry professionals to encourage and facilitate professional enhancement, leading to an overall upgrade of service quality and work productivity in the tourism industry, in parallel with the city’s goal to become a world centre of tourism and leisure. From the start of the year until mid-November, the Office has organized a total of 40 training sessions, seminars and workshops under different themes for travel agencies, tour guides, professionals of the hotel, retail and catering industries and so forth, engaging over 1,800 participants.
