Monetary and financial statistics – October 2019


According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, broad money supply continued to grow in October with a stable share of patacas. Meanwhile, resident deposits rose from a month ago whereas loans to residents posted a decline.

Money supply

Currency in circulation and demand deposits rose 0.7% and 2.5% respectively. M1 thus increased 2.2% from one month earlier. Meanwhile, quasi-monetary liabilities edged up 0.1%. The sum of these two items, i.e. M2, increased 0.3% to MOP673.7 billion. On an annual basis, M1 and M2 increased 5.4% and 8.0% respectively. The shares of pataca (MOP), Hong Kong dollar (HKD), renminbi (RMB) and United States dollar (USD) in M2 were 30.8%, 49.3%, 4.6% and 13.6% respectively.

Deposits

Resident deposits grew 0.3% from the preceding month to MOP657.3 billion whereas non-resident deposits fell 5.9% to MOP242.5 billion. On the other hand, public sector deposits with the banking sector increased 0.5% to MOP246.7 billion. As a result, total deposits in the banking sector decreased 1.0% from a month earlier to MOP1,146.5 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total deposits were 19.1%, 49.4%, 3.9% and 25.0% respectively.

Loans

Domestic loans to the private sector dropped 0.8% from a month ago to MOP514.5 billion while external loans also fell 0.2% to MOP572.6 billion. As a result, total loans to the private sector went down by 0.5% from a month earlier to MOP1,087.1 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total loans were 17.0%, 48.1%, 7.1% and 25.0% respectively.

Operating ratios

At end-October, the loan-to-deposit ratio for the resident sector dropped from 57.6% at end-September to 56.9%. On the other hand, the ratio for both the resident and non-resident sectors grew from 94.3% to 94.8%. The one-month and three-month current assets to liabilities ratios stood at 48.9% and 48.1% respectively. Concurrently, the non-performing loan ratio stabilised at 0.3%.
