A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains 3.0

The Macao Museum of Art (MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from its Portuguese acronym), and the Palace Museum will jointly present the mega exhibition series under the theme “The Long Journey”. The exhibition “A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains 3.0”, as the first phase of the exhibition series, will be inaugurated on Tuesday, 17 December, at 6pm, at the Exhibition Gallery on the 2nd floor of the MAM. The exhibition will bring the audience an exceptional artistic feast by displaying the masterpiece A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains through the latest digital interactive technology.

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the Macao’s Handover to China, MAM and the Palace Museum specially present “The Long Journey”, an exhibition series in an unprecedented scale. By displaying cultural gems associated with the Maritime Silk Road, the exhibition seeks to lead the audience to revisit the magnificence that ensued in the course of Chinese and Western cultural exchange. As the first phase of the exhibition series, the exhibition “A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains 3.0” illustrates the extraordinary charm of the painting, one of the ten most famous ancient paintings in China, by means of digital multimedia, interactive experience, and spatial displays, expressing the very best sentiments towards the splendid rivers and mountains of the motherland.

A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains, a collection of the Palace Museum, is the only extant work of painter Wang Ximeng from the Northern Song dynasty. The giant scroll of the painting features a stunning composition and is regarded as the peak of blue-green landscape in Northern Song. The painting in a refreshing colour palette is an exquisitely elaborate composition depicting awe-inspiring mountain ranges and a vast expanse of rivers, suggesting the harmonious co-existence of man and nature.

The digital long scroll A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains 3.0, with 35 meters in length and 7 meters in height, is the world’s first dynamic digital scroll with multi-channel technology and real-time interaction with the audience and is equipped with the function to change the appearance to represent different seasons and weather. Through the combination of traditional artistic techniques and innovative digital technology, it allows the audience to feel the magnificent landscape in the painting. The painting uses light and shadow to express the philosophical pursuit of “moving, travelling, seeing and living”, presenting a lively picture to the audience as if they are seeing the real landscape. An interactive experience zone related to the painting will also be set up at the exhibition venue, featuring “Poetic Remarks on the Human World”, “Formless Great Image”, “Musical Seclusive Life”, “Sublime Landscape” and “Sensory Wall”, sharing the truth of beauty behind the scroll with the audience.

The showcase “A Retrospective of Collaborations with the Palace Museum” is held at the exhibition hall on the 1st floor of MAM, presenting the fruitful achievements from the seamless collaboration between MAM and the Palace Museum over the past two decades. The second phase of the exhibition series “The Long Journey: The Forbidden City and Maritime Silk Road”, and “Cultural and creative products from the Palace Museum and education area” will be held in January 2020.
