The President of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Xi Jinping, will arrive in Macao tomorrow (18 December) afternoon to officiate at celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland.
Mr Xi, who is also Secretary General of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, will officiate at the inauguration ceremony of the fifth-term Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Friday (20 December).
Mr Xi will lead a Central Government delegation on a three-day official visit to Macao. Soon after his arrival he will meet with the Chief Executive of the Macao SAR, Mr Chui Sai On.
On Thursday evening (19 December), President Xi will meet with Macao’s incumbent leading officials representing respectively the public administration, the legislature, and the judiciary, as well as local people representing all walks of life.
President Xi will attend on Thursday evening a welcoming banquet hosted by the Macao SAR Government, and watch a celebratory variety show.
On Friday morning, President Xi will attend the “20th Anniversary Celebration of Macao’s Return to the Motherland and the Inauguration Ceremony of the Fifth-term Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region”.
Following the ceremony, President Xi will meet with officials of the new-term Macao SAR Government responsible respectively for the functions of the public administration, the legislature, and the judiciary.
President Xi is scheduled to leave the city on the afternoon of 20 December.
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Macao SAR, the Government will hold a range of activities including a flag-raising ceremony at Golden Lotus Square at 8am on Friday. There will also be a cocktail reception in the afternoon that day.
The Sports Bureau will stage at 6pm a sports and cultural show at the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium to mark the occasion. On 22 December, the Macao SAR Government and the Zhuhai Government will jointly present a fireworks display, which can be viewed either from the waterfront near Macau Tower or – on the Hengqin side – from an area known as the 'financial island’.
In addition, the Macao SAR Government has launched a dedicated website (https://www.macao20.gov.mo/) to give the public easier access to official news regarding the SAR’s 20th anniversary.
Communities, associations and civic organisations will hold celebratory events – kaleidoscopic in terms of their variety – to mark the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland.
