Transport and communications statistics for November 2019


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 240,164 as at end-November 2019, a slight increase of 0.4% year-on-year. Light automobiles (109,242) and heavy motorcycles (99,530) rose by 1.3% and 2.2% respectively, whereas light motorcycles (24,068) went down by 8.4%. New registration of motor vehicles in November dropped by 10.5% year-on-year to 1,221, with heavy motorcycles (565) declining by 24.8% while light automobiles (628) rising by 14.8%. In the first eleven months of 2019, new registration of motor vehicles decreased by 14.4% year-on-year to 11,350. Number of traffic accidents grew by 15.8% year-on-year to 1,245 in November, and number of injuries totalled 375. In the first eleven months, there were 12,517 traffic accidents; number of victims added up to 4,097 and 8 of them were killed.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in November increased by 7.9% year-on-year to 457,433 trips. Vehicular trips passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai (142,854) rose by 9.8% and those crossing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge totalled 55,631, whereas trips going through the Border Gate (255,889) dropped by 9.3%. In the first eleven months of 2019, cross-border vehicular traffic went up by 9.1% year-on-year to 4,893,915 trips. Arrivals and departures of commercial flights at the Macau International Airport totalled 6,233 trips in November, a growth of 19.5% year-on-year; trips to and from mainland China increased by 28.2% to 2,713. Arrivals and departures of commercial flights in the first eleven months grew by 19.0% year-on-year to 67,056 trips.

Gross weight of containerized cargo by land in November rose by 18.2% year-on-year to 2,229 tonnes, of which cargo passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai grew by 25.2% to 2,113 tonnes (94.8% of total). Meanwhile, gross weight of port containerized cargo declined by 24.8% to 11,951 tonnes, with cargo being handled at the Inner Harbour (5,898 tonnes) and the Ká-Hó Harbour (6,053 tonnes) falling by 31.0% and 17.5% respectively year-on-year. In the first eleven months, gross weight of containerized cargo by land increased by 32.8% year-on-year to 18,884 tonnes, while that of port containerized cargo reduced by 13.5% to 135,250 tonnes.

The Macau International Airport handled 5,230 tonnes of air cargo in November, up by 6.4% year-on-year; gross weight of inward cargo (817 tonnes), outward cargo (3,761 tonnes) and transit cargo (653 tonnes) grew by 26.5%, 2.5% and 8.9% respectively. In the first eleven months, air cargo went up by 2.0% year-on-year to 37,748 tonnes.

As at the end of November 2019, there were 116,975 fixed-line telephone subscribers, down by 6.4% year-on-year. Number of mobile phone subscribers rose by 10.6% year-on-year to 2,456,687. Internet subscribers went up by 8.2% to 585,143 and the duration of internet usage in November increased by 22.5% to 136 million hours. Total duration of internet usage reached 1.45 billion hours in the first eleven months, a surge of 26.0% year-on-year.
