The Macao Polytechnic Institute successfully held its 2020 Open Day today (January 4), attracting over 2,000 prospective senior high school graduates, their parents, and the public. Through the Open Day, participants got to know MPI's management philosophy, teaching and research quality, achievements in research and innovation, academic expertise, campus facilities and distinctive features of its academic courses. Many students and parents were attracted by the rich content and the engaging activities of the Open Day which demonstrated MPI’s vibrant and stimulating environment. They all applauded MPI’s high-quality academic disciplines, the internationalized atmosphere on campus, impeccable campus facilities and, above all, the easily accessible location. Many participants expressed their aspirations to become a member of the "MPI Family", and look forward to embarking on their journey to success in life from MPI.
The opening ceremony was officiated by President of MPI, Professor Im Sio Kei; the Director of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R., Mr. Hong Bo; the Deputy Director of the Higher Education Bureau, Mr. Chang Kun Hong; Principals and representatives of 26 secondary schools in Macao; President of the MPI Student Union, Mr. Lam Chi Chio, and Chairman of the MPI Alumni Association, Mr. Wong U Kei. Other guests attending the ceremony included representatives of various departments from the Macao SAR government, as well as from the education sector, MPI alumni, and social elites.
In his welcoming speech, Professor Im Sio Kei stressed that MPI has been striving to capitalize on China’s implementation of its national strategic plans by launching Bachelor's and postgraduate degree programmes that are catering to the emerging needs of social development. MPI has so far nurtured approximately 20,000 high-caliber graduates with professional expertise and innovative skills, diverse capabilities and a global vision. Recent years have witnessed MPI’s rapid development in its scientific research endeavours. Last week, the Vice Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR officiated the plaque-unveiling ceremony of the "Engineering Research Centre of Applied Technology on Machine Translation and Artificial Intelligence, Ministry of Education" – the first centre of its kind, supported by the Ministry of Education in the Hong Kong and Macao regions. The establishment of the center testifies to the great support for MPI’s scientific and technological research work. Building on the strong platform of the Engineering Research Centre, MPI is now resolved to speed up investments in scientific research by integrating resources and optimizing related projects. Meanwhile, MPI is also committed to transforming MPI into a smart campus, whereby teaching, research, daily operation and information systems are all integrated and digitalized seamlessly for the benefits of students. MPI takes great pride in providing students a stimulating learning environment and a rewarding learning experience to cultivate their great potentials and make contributions to the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative.
Professor Im Sio Kei reiterated that since 2014, MPI has become Macao’s first tertiary institution to have passed the accreditation review by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) from the U.K., and now MPI boasts the most accredited degree programmes in Macao. MPI is the only university in the country to have won the "Asia-Pacific Education Quality Award" two times, and the quality of MPI’s teaching has received international recognition. The outstanding results achieved by the students and alumni are testimony to the supreme quality of MPI’s management philosophy. For example, they have won gold, silver, and bronze medals in competitions of the Asian Games, and have been awarded distinguished medals by the Macao SAR Government. MPI’s students have performed well in multiple disciplines, including winning the National Chinese Youth Innovation Award, the gold and silver prizes in China's "Internet +" University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and multiple gold awards in the Pan-Pearl River Delta University Student Computer Works Competition. Towards the end of his speech, Professor Im Sio Kei acknowledged sincere thanks to all sectors of the community for their continuing support to MPI, and hoped that the public could get to know more about the distinctive features of MPI through the Open Day. The president ended his speech by calling on all prospective senior high school graduates and young people from all walks of life to apply to MPI.
During the Open Day, MPI interacted actively with students, parents and the public through a host of ingeniously designed activities which included exploring exciting Internet-famous photo spots on campus, IT innovation experiences, simultaneous interpretation workshops, skincare DIY, fun sport games, artistic and creative hands-on workshops, healthcare trials, "Music-n-Fun" vocal performances, and Lucky Games, etc. Many students and parents have indicated that they have enjoyed the Open Day activities, which allowed them to experience first-hand the dynamic and stimulating environment of MPI. Indeed, MPI’s "student-centered learning and teaching, and the quality-oriented management philosophy" plus the bright prospects of MPI graduates are all significant factors influencing prospective students’ application decisions.
