Government responds to Macao references in U.S. Congress report on China

The Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China expresses its strong opposition to the content relating to Macao contained in a report lately issued by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China of the United States of America.

The 2019 annual report overlooked the fact that the Macao SAR has made — over the course of the past 20 years since returning to China — remarkable achievements in various aspects. Such achievements were widely recognised and have triggered exponential leaps in the city’s development. In addition, the authors of the U.S. report selectively ignored the benefits enjoyed by Macao steaming from the “One country, two systems” principle, and the latter’s great vitality.

The U.S. report made baseless accusations and represents a brutal interference in the internal affairs of Macao, which are entirely part of China´s domestic affairs.

The SAR Government strongly urges the U.S. and the mentioned commission to refrain from making biased statements, and to stick to the facts. It urges the U.S. to stop such wrongful practices, instead making further effort to advance China-U.S. relations and to promote exchanges between the Macao SAR and U.S. cities.
