Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 122 hotels & guesthouses operating at the end of January 2020, an increase of 5 year-on-year. Number of available guest rooms remained steady at 39,000. The average occupancy rate of guest rooms fell by 13.5 percentage points year-on-year to 79.4%; the rates of 3-star hotels (81.9%) and 5-star hotels (80.4%) dropped by 12.8 percentage points and 14.5 percentage points respectively.
A total of 1,090,000 guests checked into hotels & guesthouses in January 2020, a decrease of 11.4% year-on-year. Guests coming from mainland China (792,000), the Republic of Korea (42,000) and Taiwan (31,000) dropped by 11.3%, 23.0% and 20.9% respectively, while those from Hong Kong (107,000) grew by 11.0%. The average length of stay of guests went up by 0.1 night year-on-year to 1.5 nights. Visitor-guests accounted for 78.9% of the total overnight visitors, a growth of 7.3 percentage points.
DSEC stated that owing to the impact of COVID-19 epidemic, data from only 51% of the interviewed travel agencies are collected at the present stage (i.e., 114 establishments that provided services to approximately 46% of the package tour visitors/outbound residents in January 2019). According to the information collected, package tour visitors of these travel agencies plunged by 74.1% year-on-year in January 2020 and number of outbound residents using their services declined by 56.7%.
