Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population at end-2019 increased by 12,200 year-on-year to 679,600, with the female population accounting for 53.3% of the total. The proportion of elderly population (aged 65 and over) grew by 0.8 percentage points year-on-year to 11.9%, whereas that of adult population (aged 15-64) dropped by 0.8 percentage points to 74.9%. The population of Macao continued to age, with the ageing ratio rising to 90.3%.
Local population, excluding non-resident workers and foreign students living in Macao, went up by 1.2% year-on-year to 555,000, and 53.3% of them were females. The elderly (aged 65 and over) took up 14.6% of the total while the youth (aged 0-14) constituted 16.1%. The elderly dependency ratio for the local population was 21.0%, indicating that about 5 adults supported 1 elderly person.
In 2019, a total of 5,979 live births were delivered, an increase of 54 year-on-year, whereas the birth rate fell by 0.1 per mille point to 8.9‰. The sex ratio of newborns was 106.5, corresponding to 106.5 male babies per 100 female babies. Meanwhile, mortality increased by 213 year-on-year to 2,282 in 2019, with 57.8% being males; the mortality rate was 3.4‰, up by 0.3 per mille points. Mortality from Malignant neoplasms (810) was the highest, accounting for 35.5% of the total deaths, while mortality from Hypertension (282) and Heart diseases (210) made up 12.4% and 9.2% respectively.
Non-resident workers totalled 196,538 at end-2019, up by 8,058 year-on-year. There were 54,748 non-resident workers engaging in Hotels, restaurants & similar activities, an increase of 1,685; those working in the Construction sector totalled 29,387, down by 741. Number of Chinese immigrants rose by 225 year-on-year to 3,757 in 2019, a rebound after three consecutive years of decline; among them, 2,601 came from Guangdong Province, up by 339. Females accounted for 64.8% of the Chinese immigrants. Meanwhile, number of individuals granted right of abode dropped by 107 year-on-year to 967.
A total of 3,724 cases of marriage registration were recorded in 2019, down by 3.1% year-on-year. Median age at first marriage was 30.2 for the bridegrooms and 29.1 for the brides, up by 1.0 year and 1.5 years respectively. Number of divorce cases decreased by 109 year-on-year to 1,435.
At end-2019, number of households totalled 197,500, up by 3,100 year-on-year.
