Transport and communications statistics for February 2020


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 240,662 as at end-February 2020, a slight increase of 0.6% year-on-year. Light automobiles (109,654) and heavy motorcycles (99,959) rose by 1.3% and 2.1% respectively, whereas light motorcycles (23,705) dropped by 7.6%. As vehicle registration services were temporarily suspended in February amid the epidemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia, new registration of motor vehicles reduced by 39.9% year-on-year to 436, with light automobiles (222) and heavy motorcycles (192) falling by 21.3% and 53.2% respectively. In the first two months of 2020, new registration of motor vehicles decreased by 31.0% year-on-year to 1,349. Number of traffic accidents in February declined by 62.6% year-on-year to 431, and number of injuries totalled 150. In the first two months, there were 1,443 traffic accidents, involving 497 victims and 3 of them were killed.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in February fell substantially by 65.0% year-on-year to 130,850 trips, of which vehicular trips passing through the Border Gate (83,513) and the Checkpoint of Cotai (24,248) tumbled by 64.8% and 78.8% respectively; however, trips crossing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge went up by 11.2% to 21,897. In the first two months of 2020, cross-border vehicular traffic dropped by 33.1% year-on-year to 555,526 trips. Meanwhile, arriving and departing commercial flights at the Macau International Airport plunged by 79.6% year-on-year to 1,138 trips in February, with trips to and from mainland China (262) and Taiwan (263) showing respective decline of 88.4% and 75.0%. In the first two months, arriving and departing commercial flights fell by 30.5% year-on-year to 7,884 trips.

Gross weight of containerized cargo by land in February grew by 15.1% year-on-year to 996 tonnes, of which cargo passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai expanded by 23.7% to 970 tonnes. On the other hand, gross weight of port containerized cargo went down by 4.5% to 7,585 tonnes, with cargo being handled at the Ká-Hó Harbour (1,771 tonnes) falling by 52.1% whereas thatbeing shippedthrough the Inner Harbour (5,814 tonnes) rising by 36.9%. In the first two months, gross weight of containerized cargo by land increased by 6.3% year-on-year to 3,301 tonnes, while that of port containerized cargo decreased by 22.0% to 18,611 tonnes.

The Macau International Airport handled 645 tonnes of air cargo in February, a drop of 56.5% year-on-year. Gross weight of inward cargo (235 tonnes), outward cargo (337 tonnes) and transit cargo (73 tonnes) declined by 46.0%, 60.5% and 62.6% respectively. In the first two months, air cargo fell by 19.6% year-on-year to 4,074 tonnes.

As at the end of February 2020, there were 115,332 fixed-line telephone subscribers, down by 6.2% year-on-year; meanwhile, number of mobile phone subscribers rose by 13.5% to 2,440,051. Internet subscribers grew by 8.4% year-on-year to 595,577 in February and the duration of internet usage edged up by 0.8% to 128 million hours. Total duration of internet usage reached 267 million hours in the first two months, an increase of 7.9% year-on-year.
