The five-day (1 – 5 May 2021) 1st May Labor Day Holidays of Mainland China has come to an end. Preliminary statistics revealed that Macao welcomed 167,000 visitor arrivals during the 1st May Labor Day Holidays while the average occupancy rate of local hotels reached 83.2%. On 1 May, Macao registered the new highest daily record of 45,000 visitor arrivals.
Considerable increase in visitor arrivals and hotel occupancy rate
The average daily visitor arrivals and average hotel occupancy rate during the 1st May Labor Day Holidays this year both surged significantly compared with the corresponding figures during the Spring Festival Golden Week and April in 2021.
Throughout the five-day Labor Day Holidays, Macao welcomed 167,000 visitors, among which 156,000 visitors came from Mainland China. Average daily visitor arrivals hit 33,000 during the Labour Day Holidays, which rose by 158.2% compared with the Spring Festival Golden Week in 2021, and increased by 25.4% compared with the figure in April.
In addition, compared with the Labour Day Holidays in 2019, the average daily volume of visitor arrivals during the Labour Day Holidays 2021 rebounded up to 21.1% of the pre-pandemic figure (158,082) during the Labour Day Holidays in 2019. The average hotel occupancy rate even neared the corresponding figure in 2019 at the level of 96.6%.

Occupancy rate of hotel establishments topped 83%
Figures provided by industry operators revealed that local hotel establishments (hotels and guest houses) saw an average occupancy rate of 83.2% during the Labour Day Holidays, an increase of 34.6 percentage points compared with the Spring Festival Golden Week in 2021. Up to date, the supply of local hotels and guest houses has reached a total of 41,923 rooms.
Industry figures show that the average occupancy rate of 5-Star hotels was 84.8%, up 33.8 percentage points compared with that of the Spring Festival Golden Week in 2021. The average occupancy rate of 4-Star hotels was 79.6%, up 29.7 percentage points. The average occupancy rate of 3-Star hotels was 86.6%, up 41.4 percentage points. The average occupancy rate of 2-Star hotels was 74.9%, up 50.3 percentage points, whereas the average occupancy rate of guest houses went up by 30.5 percentage points to 56.4%.

Room rate of hotel establishments
The average room rate of hotel establishments (hotels and guest houses) in Macao was about 1,263.7 patacas during the Labour Day Holidays, an increase of 1.7% compared with that of the Spring Festival Golden Week in 2021. The average room rates of 5-Star and 4-Star hotels were around 1,475.9 patacas and 885.8 patacas respectively, up 1.1% and 20.8% respectively. The average room rates of 3-Star and 2-Star hotels were around 799.7 patacas and 335.7 patacas respectively, a rise of 11.0% and 63.8%. The average room rate of local guest houses was around 287.1 patacas, up 62.8%.

Rigorous patrols
During 1 – 5 May, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) conducted a total of 28 inspections targeting major ports of entry, tourist attractions, as well as hotels for their implementation of pandemic preventive measures. During inspections, no sign of irregularities was discovered. The Office also carried out one joint action with Public Security Police Force against illegal accommodation and did not discover any alleged use of premises as illegal accommodation.
During the Labour Day Holidays, MGTO received 11 visitor complaints and assistance requests mainly about hotel service, dining price and service attitude, etc., which the Office has followed up in accord.
Continuous promotion to spur tourism recovery
With the pandemic situation remaining stable across the Mainland, MGTO has rolled out online and offline promotional initiatives targeting the Mainland visitor market to highlight Macao’s image as a safe and quality destination continuously, spurring a steady upward trend of visitor arrivals. This Labour Day Holidays, visitor arrivals in Macao hit a nice record while the average occupancy rate of local hotels even reached 83%. Carrying on the bright prospect, MGTO will work out meticulous planning of tourism products and destination promotion in the Mainland via different channels and initiatives, leading more Mainland visitors to explore Macao and spend in local communities for tourism revival.
