The aggregate number Macao-registered motor vehicles allowed into Hengqin, Zhuhai, will be increased to 10,000 under the quota system of a cross-boundary scheme.
The quota increase – from an aggregate of 5,000 last year – seeks to improve further the convenience of travel by members of the Macao public between Macao and Hengqin, and to advance the development of the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone planned for Hengqin.
The latest information was jointly announced today by the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government and the Zhuhai Government.
Starting from 15 March, either Macao people working in Hengqin and that are owners of a Macao-registered vehicle; or Macao people that own either a residential unit, office unit, or shop in Hengqin and also have a Macao-registered vehicle, will be given priority when making a joint application to the Macao and Zhuhai authorities for permission to bring such a vehicle in and out of Hengqin.
Passes issued under the newly-announced additional quota of 5,000 permits will be allocated in batches. There will be 300 new ones released every 30 days, in the first 90 days of the measure being implemented. Such allocation will be done on a “first come first served” basis.
The release schedule of the remainder of the available new quota will be reviewed – on a monthly basis – by the Macao SAR Government and the Zhuhai Government, taking into account traffic volume and boundary-crossing activity of vehicles at the new Hengqin Port.
Under the updated scheme, Macao ID holders aged 18 or above will be able to apply for permission to bring a vehicle in and out of Hengqin. Each vehicle will be allowed to register two holders of driver’s license issued by the mainland authorities.
Macao official vehicles registered in Macao will also be allowed to enter Hengqin under the updated system. This is in the light of facilitating closer exchanges between the two governments in the context of advancing development of the Intensive Cooperation Zone.
Allowing a greater number of Macao-registered vehicles to enter Hengqin is one of the concrete steps stemming from the supportive measures promoted by the Central Government to boost the development prospects of Macao. The vehicle measure is also a major achievement of Guangdong-Macao cooperation.
The number of Macao-registered vehicles allowed to enter Hengqin has been expanded in a phased manner, from the total 400 quota available at the introduction of the scheme in December 2016. The increase in quota size has greatly promoted movement of people between Macao and Hengqin.
