Transport and communications statistics for January 2021


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 244,854 as at end-January 2021, up by 1.6% year-on-year. Light automobiles (111,823) and heavy motorcycles (103,309) grew by 1.8% and 3.3% year-on-year respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in January surged by 39.9% year-on-year to 1,277, with that of heavy motorcycles (649) and light automobiles (584) increasing by 56.8% and 28.9% respectively. Number of traffic accidents in January totalled 1,198, which involved 396 persons injured.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in January 2021 decreased by 14.3% year-on-year to 364,057 trips. Light automobile trips (331,915) dropped by 12.5% year-on-year, whereas heavy automobile trips (30,064) rose by 26.3% which led to a 13.2% growth of gross weight of containerized cargo by land (2,608 tonnes). Vehicular traffic (146,653 trips) and containerized cargo (2,544 tonnes) passing through the Checkpoint of Macao Port Administration Area of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge constituted the largest shares among all land border checkpoints, at 40.3% and 97.5% of the respective total.

Gross weight of port containerized cargo grew by 13.8% year-on-year to 12,545 tonnes in January, with cargo being shipped through the Inner Harbour surging by 69.1% to 9,310 tonnes (74.2% of total).

Arriving and departing commercial flights totalled 925 trips, representing a decline of 86.3% year-on-year. Air cargo dropped by 9.3% year-on-year to 3,112 tonnes, of which gross weight of inward cargo (369 tonnes) and transit cargo (19 tonnes) declined by 38.1% and 94.6% respectively, whereas that of outward cargo (2,723 tonnes) increased by 10.1%.

As at the end of January, there were 106,413 fixed-line telephone subscribers, a drop of 8.0% year-on-year. Number of mobile phone subscribers decreased by 38.7% year-on-year to 1,563,951, with stored-value GSM card subscribers (731,127) falling by 58.2%. Internet subscribers rose by 6.9% year-on-year to 634,660; total duration of internet usage went down by 1.2% to 138 million hours.
