Transport and communications statistics for February 2021


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 244,313 as at end-February 2021, up by 1.5% year-on-year. Light automobiles (111,606) and heavy motorcycles (103,171) grew by 1.8% and 3.2% year-on-year respectively. As vehicle registration services were suspended for a period in February last year, new registration of motor vehicles in February this year jumped by 110.3% year-on-year to 917, of which heavy motorcycles (445) and light automobiles (435) surged by 131.8% and 95.9% respectively. In the first two months of 2021, new registration of motor vehicles increased by 62.6% year-on-year to 2,194. Number of traffic accidents in February totalled 919, with 280 persons injured. In the first two months of 2021, there were 2,117 traffic accidents, which caused 676 injuries.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in February 2021 soared by 120.9% year-on-year to 303,539 trips, of which light automobile trips (285,558) and heavy truck trips (16,439) leapt by 137.5% and 30.9% respectively. Meanwhile, gross weight of containerized cargo by land rose by 32.9% year-on-year to 1,323 tonnes, with 93.8% (1,241 tonnes) passing through the Checkpoint of Macao Port Administration Area of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. In the first two months of 2021, cross-border vehicular traffic (667,596 trips) and gross weight of containerized cargo by land (3,931 tonnes) increased by 18.8% and 19.1% year-on-year respectively.

Gross weight of port containerized cargo dropped by 7.7% year-on-year to 7,002 tonnes in February; cargo being handled at the Ká-Hó Harbour (607 tonnes) decreased by 65.7%, whereas thatbeing shippedthrough the Inner Harbour (6,395 tonnes) rose by 10.0%. In the first two months of 2021, gross weight of port containerized cargo went up by 5.0% year-on-year to 19,546 tonnes.

Arriving and departing commercial flights totalled 634 trips in February, representing a fall of 44.3% year-on-year. Meanwhile, air cargo escalated by 183.4% year-on-year to 1,826 tonnes, of which gross weight of inward cargo (250 tonnes) and outward cargo (1,566 tonnes) expanded by 6.6% and 364.5% respectively, whereas that of transit cargo (10 tonnes) declined by 86.2%. In the first two months of 2021, arriving and departing commercial flights dipped by 80.2% year-on-year to 1,559 trips, while air cargo rose by 21.2% to 4,938 tonnes.

As at the end of February, there were 105,913 fixed-line telephone subscribers, a drop of 8.2% year-on-year. Number of mobile phone subscribers decreased by 41.7% year-on-year to 1,423,654, with prepaid SIM card subscribers (591,513) falling by 63.9%. Internet subscribers rose by 6.8% year-on-year to 636,203. In February, total duration of internet usage went down by 3.2% year-on-year to 124 million hours. Moreover, total duration of internet usage in the first two months of 2021 reduced by 2.2% year-on-year to 261 million hours.
