Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the 4 hospitals in Macao provided a total of 1,715 in-patient beds in 2020, an increase of 87 year-on-year. Number of in-patients went down by 13.0% year-on-year to 54,000, while the average hospital stay rose by 0.2 day to 7.6 days. With an increase in number of in-patient beds and a decrease in total hospital stays of in-patients, the occupancy rate of in-patient beds dropped by 12.1 percentage points year-on-year to 66.2%.
Hospital out-patient attendances decreased by 150,000 (-7.9%) year-on-year to 1,742,000, mainly due to a fall of 82,000 consultations (-26.4%) in Internal Medicine and a decline of 65,000 (-46.7%) in Paediatrics/ Neonatology. Analysed by medical department, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation accounted for the majority (232,000) of the out-patient attendances, at 13.3%, followed by Internal Medicine (229,000) and Chinese Medicine (191,000), which took up 13.2% and 10.9% respectively.
Emergency attendances declined by 30.0% year-on-year to 342,000, with those in the Macao Peninsula (278,000) and Taipa (64,000) falling by 27.3% and 39.8% respectively. Meanwhile, about 18,000 cases of surgical operations were performed in 2020, down by 6.8% year-on-year; surgical operations in Ophthalmology (2,788 cases) went down by 30.2%.
There were 702 primary health care establishments (including public health centres, private clinics, etc.) in 2020. Total number of consultations decreased by 21.0% year-on-year to 3,249,000, of which consultations in government health establishments (819,000) and private clinics (2,430,000) fell by 12.8% and 23.4% respectively. Consultations in Chinese Medicine (1,043,000) constituted 32.1% of the total, followed by those in General Practice (753,000) and Stomatology/Odontology (284,000), at 23.2% and 8.7% respectively.
A total of 395,000 doses of vaccines were administered in hospitals and primary health care establishments in 2020, down by 5.0% year-on-year; vaccinations against Influenza rose by 12.2% to 181,000 doses.
In 2020, a total of 1,909,000 nucleic acid tests for the novel coronavirus were conducted in hospitals and primary healthcare establishments.
Number of blood donations rose by 7.1% year-on-year to 16,541 in 2020, with 3,110 first-time blood donations. A total of 11,537 persons donated blood, up by 3.5% year-on-year.
According to the administrative data provided by the Health Bureau, number of doctors in Macao dropped by 1.1% year-on-year to 1,789 in 2020, while that of nurses rose by 3.1% to 2,568. There were 2.6 doctors and 3.8 nurses per 1,000 population.
