UM’s Portuguese Language Summer Course is now open for applications

The University of Macau (UM) is committed to nurturing bilingual talent and has been offering a variety of courses for many years. One of these courses, the popular Portuguese Language Summer Course, will continue to be offered online this year between 5 July and 23 July. Students, teachers, translators, and those who are interested in the Portuguese language, aged 16 or above, are welcome to apply. The application deadline is 24 June.

Organised by the Department of Portuguese of UM’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the 35th Portuguese Language Summer Course aims to improve students’ Portuguese language skills, expand their sociolinguistic knowledge of the Portuguese language, and raise their cultural and intercultural awareness, through both language and theme-based courses. The language courses are offered at five levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, and C), with 45 hours at each level. Around 15 hours will be devoted to guided autonomous learning. In addition to courses in writing and speaking skills, the language courses will also cover grammar, vocabulary, and other level-appropriate content. The gastronomy and music workshops will be recorded live and let students explore the foods and music cultures of Portuguese-speaking countries.

The theme-based courses consist of 75 hours of courses on various topics, including literature, linguistics, cinema, drama, gastronomy, dance, music, history, education, translation, contemporary Portuguese society, contemporary Portuguese art, as well as Portugal and Europe. In addition to language and cultural courses, students will learn about the unique cultural background of Macao as well as the lives of Portuguese and Macanese communities in Macao and Portugal. The training provided in the programme is equivalent to that of a university course. Upon completion of the summer course, students will receive a certificate of attendance. Alternatively, students may choose to take a final assessment to obtain a certificate of competence, which will contain a description of the student’s language ability and a list of the courses he or she has attended.

The summer course will be held online via MOODLE and ZOOM, from 9:00am to 6:00pm, between 5 July and 23 July. The department will provide students with e-books and other online learning material. For more information or to apply, please visit https://fah.um.edu.mo/dportsummercourse2021/.
