CE: CPC’s leadership is at core of ‘One country, two systems’ principle

The Chief Executive, Mr Ho Iat Seng, poses for a group photograph with guests at the opening ceremony of the photo exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, held in Macao.

The Chief Executive, Mr Ho Iat Seng, today called on members of the public to recognise that supporting and safeguarding the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) are the basis and the core means by which the successful implementation of the “One country, two systems” principle in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) can be maintained.

Without the CPC, there would be no new China; and without the CPC’s leadership, there would not be the prosperity and stability enjoyed in Macao under the “One country, two systems” principle. That major principle had been established by the CPC upon resumption of China’s sovereignty over Hong Kong and over Macao, added the Chief Executive.

Mr Ho made the remarks during the opening ceremony of a photography exhibition held in Macao to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC. The exhibition is co-organised by the State Council Information Office, the Macao SAR Government, and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR.

Through vivid pictures and in-depth descriptions, the photo exhibition offered the Macao public, especially the younger generations, opportunities to learn about the century-long history of the CPC, and to gain a better understanding about the CPC’s 100-year journey of pursuing the country’s progress, said Mr Ho. Knowledge of such matters would reinforce the social and political foundation of patriotism in Macao; foster a sense of recognition in the achievements of the CPC; and develop a sense of national identity and a sense of national pride, he added.

The Chief Executive stated the Macao SAR Government adhered closely to its mission of seeking to advance the happinessof the Macao public and pragmatically pursuing progress in the Government’s work.

Currently, the Macao SAR Government was dedicating utmost effort to controlling the COVID-19 pandemic and boosting economic recovery, while proactively seizing on opportunities presented by implementation of national strategies. Macao would also spare no effort in: enhancing its existing comparative strengths; contributing to the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area initiative; contributing to the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone planned for Hengqin; promoting local effort for adequate economic diversification; and seeking a better pattern of internal development amid integration into national development, said Mr Ho.

In his address, Mr Ho stated Macao would continue to implement faithfully the “One country, two systems” principle, uphold steadfastly the fundamental principle of “patriots governing Macao”, and advance in general terms Macao’s successful practising of “One country, two systems”. The Macao SAR Government firmly believed that under the leadership of the CPC, the “One country, two systems” principle with Macao characteristics would continue to be implemented steadily and successfully. In addition, the second of the “two centenary goals” – i.e. to build China into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, and harmonious by the centenary of the People’s Republic of China – and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation would also be realised, said Mr Ho.

Also delivering a speech at the photography exhibition opening ceremony was the Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Mr Fu Ziying. He said members of the public in Macao should resolutely support the leadership of the CPC; firmly safeguard national sovereignty, national security, and national development interests; and distance themselves from separatist groups in either Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Mr Fu called on the Macao community to support the Macao SAR Government in relation to law-based administration, optimisation of people’s livelihoods, maintenance of social stability, and pursuit of prosperity.

Effort should be made to maintain in the Macao community the core value of love for the country and for Macao, and to ensure implementation of the fundamental principle of “patriots governing Macao”, in a bid further to consolidate the social and political bases for patriotism in Macao, stated Mr Fu.

Guests attending this morning’s opening ceremony included: the Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR, Mr Liu Xianfa; the Commander of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Macao Garrison, Senior Colonel Xu Liangcai; and Deputy Director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Information Department of the State Council Information Office, Mr Xie Yingjun.

The photography exhibition, taking place at the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex, runs until 15 July.
