Transport and communications statistics for May 2021


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 244,420 as at end-May 2021, up by 2.0% year-on-year. Light automobiles (111,889) and heavy motorcycles (103,537) went up by 2.3% and 3.6% year-on-year respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in May dropped by 16.6% year-on-year to 915, with that of heavy motorcycles (472) falling by 29.6% whereas that of light automobiles (426) lifting by 10.1%. From January to May 2021, new registration of motor vehicles increased by 26.0% year-on-year to 5,392. Number of traffic accidents in May totalled 1,107, with 393 persons injured. In the first five months of 2021, there were 5,204 traffic accidents, which caused 1,787 injuries.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in May 2021 soared by 761.8% year-on-year to 395,466 trips, attributable to a boost of 1,666.8% in light automobile trips (367,435); besides, heavy truck trips (26,107) grew by 4.1%. Meanwhile, gross weight of containerized cargo by land rose by 16.5% year-on-year to 2,275 tonnes, with 88.1% (2,003 tonnes) passing through the Checkpoint of Macao Port Administration Area of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. From January to May 2021, cross-border vehicular traffic (1,825,923 trips) and gross weight of containerized cargo by land (10,764 tonnes) increased by 113.0% and 17.1% year-on-year respectively.

Gross weight of port containerized cargo grew by 33.6% year-on-year to 10,828 tonnes in May; cargo being handled at the Inner Harbour (8,971 tonnes) and the Ká-Hó Harbour (1,856 tonnes) expanded by 23.7% and 118.0% respectively. From January to May 2021, gross weight of port containerized cargo went up by 36.9% year-on-year to 57,745 tonnes.

Arriving and departing commercial flights totalled 1,696 trips in May, an upsurge of 612.6% year-on-year. Air cargo climbed by 27.7% year-on-year to 3,224 tonnes, of which gross weight of inward cargo (355 tonnes) and outward cargo (2,846 tonnes) grew by 116.4% and 21.7% respectively. In the first five months of 2021, number of arriving and departing commercial flights fell by 33.2% year-on-year to 5,889 trips, while air cargo rose by 51.3% to 15,796 tonnes.

As at the end of May, there were 104,082 fixed-line telephone subscribers, down by 7.7% year-on-year. Number of mobile phone subscribers decreased by 36.6% year-on-year to 1,246,341, ascribable to a 64.6% drop in prepaid SIM card subscribers (406,753). In May, internet subscribers rose by 5.2% year-on-year to 644,110. Total duration of internet usage in May went up by 3.0% year-on-year to 143 million hours, whereas the duration from January to May 2021 edged down by 0.3% to 677 million hours.
