External merchandise trade statistics for June 2021


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export amounted to MOP1.19 billion in June 2021, up by 62.2% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP1.02 billion) rose by 69.3%, with that of Watches and Diamond & diamond jewellery surging by 173.7% and 138.4% respectively. Moreover, value of domestic exports (MOP167 million) grew by 28.8%, with that of Copper & articles thereof rising by 96.7%. Total merchandise import swelled by 199.6% year-on-year to MOP15.10 billion, of which imports of Mobile phones, Gold jewellery, Watches and Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products rocketed by 1,851.4%, 1,575.3%, 817.4% and 358.2% respectively; in contrast, imports of Articles for casino declined by 45.1%. Merchandise trade deficit in June 2021 totalled MOP13.91 billion.

In the second quarter of 2021, total value of merchandise export (MOP3.24 billion) and merchandise import (MOP44.36 billion) grew by 64.4% and 239.5% respectively year-on-year, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP41.12 billion.

In the first half year of 2021, total value of merchandise export increased by 34.8% year-on-year to MOP6.71 billion, of which value of re-exports (MOP5.79 billion) and domestic exports (MOP916 million) rose by 35.4% and 31.0% respectively. Total value of merchandise import expanded by 151.9% year-on-year to MOP73.97 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP67.26 billion for the first half year of 2021, up by MOP42.88 billion from MOP24.39 billion a year earlier.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to mainland China in the first half year of 2021 rose by 20.7% year-on-year to MOP964 million, of which exports to the Nine Provinces of the Pan Pearl River Delta (MOP893 million) increased by 20.6%. Exports to Hong Kong (MOP4.76 billion) and the USA (MOP315 million) grew by 42.8% and 47.9% respectively year-on-year, whereas exports to the EU (MOP95 million) dropped by 2.1%. Exports to the Belt and Road Countries (MOP166 million) and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (MOP4 million) reduced by 0.4% and 59.5% respectively. Meanwhile, exports of Textiles & garments slid by 14.3% year-on-year to MOP668 million, while exports of Non-textiles went up by 43.9% to MOP6.04 billion.

By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP24.82 billion) and the EU (MOP23.04 billion) in the first half year of 2021 surged by 130.4% and 197.5% respectively year-on-year. Imports from the Belt and Road Countries (MOP12.29 billion) leapt by 116.4%, while imports from the Portuguese-speaking Countries (MOP331 million) fell by 3.0%. Analysed by place of consignment, merchandise import from Hong Kong (MOP63.44 billion) showed an upsurge of 185.7% year-on-year. Imports from mainland China expanded by 41.0% to MOP7.98 billion, with imports from the Nine Provinces of the Pan Pearl River Delta (MOP7.77 billion) rising by 39.8%. Imports of Consumer goods jumped by 172.3% to MOP52.30 billion, of which imports of Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products (MOP11.07 billion), Watches (MOP6.50 billion), Handbags & wallets (MOP5.47 billion) and Gold jewellery (MOP5.23 billion) ballooned by 363.4%, 371.9%, 282.2% and 432.5% respectively. Besides, imports of Mobile phones (MOP10.20 billion) shot up by 838.8%. Imports of Fuels & lubricants (MOP2.80 billion) and Construction materials (MOP1.55 billion) registered respective growth of 9.6% and 90.4%.

External merchandise trade totalled MOP80.68 billion in the first half year of 2021, up by 134.9% compared with MOP34.34 billion a year earlier.
