According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, the total number of personal credit cards and debit cards issued by banks in Macao increased in the second quarter of 2021. Both the credit card and debit card turnover witnessed quarterly decreases. On the other hand, the number and value of transactions of local mobile payment tools continued to rise quarter-to-quarter.
Payment cards issued
The total number of personal credit cards issued by banks in Macao stood at 1,490,781 at end-June 2021, an increase of 1.0% over the previous quarter or 2.1% from a year ago. The total number of debit cards issued by banks in Macao reached 1,857,440, representing a growth of 3.2% quarter-to-quarter or 10.3% year-on-year.
Credit limit granted and delinquency
At end-June 2021, credit card credit limit granted by banks in Macao reached MOP44.2 billion, up 1.1% from end-March 2021. Credit card receivables amounted to MOP2.4 billion, of which the rollover amount totalled MOP725.5 million, representing 30.3% of credit card receivables. The delinquency ratio, i.e. the ratio of delinquent amount overdue for more than three months to credit card receivables, edged up by 0.1 percentage point to 2.4% when compared with end-March 2021.
Turnover and repayment
For the second quarter of 2021, the credit card turnover totalled MOP5.0 billion, a drop of 8.3% quarter-to-quarter but a rise of 9.0% year-on-year. The cash advance turnover was MOP156.7 million, occupying 3.1% of total credit card turnover. The number of credit card transactions reached 6.9 million, representing a decline of 1.7% from the previous quarter. Credit card repayments, in which payments for interest and fees are included, dropped by 9.8% from the previous quarter but witnessed a growth of 13.8% from the same period last year to MOP5.2 billion. On the other hand, the number of debit card transactions other than cash withdrawals fell 22.1% from the previous quarter to 548.0 thousand. The debit card turnover totalled MOP1.1 billion, a decrease of 12.9% quarter-to-quarter but an increase of 16.9% year-on-year.
Mobile payment
The number of transactions carried out by local mobile payment tools grew by 38.3% from the previous quarter to 48.0 million in the second quarter of 2021. The transaction value reached MOP4.4 billion, up 44.1% from the first three months of 2021. The average amount per transaction was MOP91.9. At end-June 2021, the number of mobile payment terminals and QR code signs totalled 83.5 thousand, a rise of 8.8% quarter-to-quarter.
