Macao a co-host of National Games in 2025

Macao, along with Guangdong and Hong Kong, will jointly organise and host the 15th National Games to be held in 2025, as announced by the State Council on Thursday (26 August).

Macao’s involvement in organising the event, the highest-level and largest in scale, domestic sporting games in the country, is an encouragement to the Macao public, including the city’s athletes.

The Macao Special Administrative Region Government will work closely with its counterparts in Guangdong and in Hong Kong, to organise the event under the strict principles of “simplicity, safety and brilliance”. The three governments will fully utilise existing sporting facilities, streamline the budget for the event, and monitor closely the standards and scale of the Games; while paying close attention to the latest developments regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure the necessary prevention and control effort takes place.

Following the 13th National Games in 2017, the Guangdong Government proposed organising and hosting the 15th National Games jointly with Hong Kong and Macao. This was with a view to facilitating the respective development of the sports sector in the three places, and in order to align better with national development strategies. After assessing the feasibility of such a joint effort, the three governments officially filed an application to the General Administration of Sport of China.

Progress on work relating to the 15th National Games will be announced in a timely manner.
