Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export amounted to MOP1.07 billion in August 2021, up by 20.1% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP889 million) grew by 15.0%, with that of Wine and Garments surging by 432.0% and 95.0% respectively. Moreover, value of domestic exports (MOP176 million) increased by 54.5%, with that of Copper & articles thereof and Garments rising by 82.2% and 19.6% respectively. Total merchandise import went up by 42.6% year-on-year to MOP12.23 billion, of which imports of Mobile phones, Gold jewellery, Handbags & wallets and Watches swelled by 297.6%, 249.7%, 151.5% and 148.2% respectively; in contrast, imports of Electronic components and Other textile made-up articles declined by 59.2% and 30.9% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in August 2021 totalled MOP11.16 billion.
From January to August this year, total value of merchandise export increased by 28.2% year-on-year to MOP8.89 billion, of which value of re-exports (MOP7.62 billion) and domestic exports (MOP1.27 billion) went up by 27.8% and 31.0% respectively. Total value of merchandise import expanded by 124.2% year-on-year to MOP101.34 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP92.45 billion for the first eight months of 2021, up by MOP54.17 billion from MOP38.28 billion a year earlier.
Analysed by destination, merchandise export to mainland China from January to August 2021 rose by 27.4% year-on-year to MOP1.37 billion, of which exports to the Nine Provinces of the Pan Pearl River Delta (MOP1.23 billion) increased by 24.3%. Exports to Hong Kong (MOP6.19 billion), the USA (MOP450 million) and the EU (MOP125 million) grew by 30.2%, 32.2% and 2.9% respectively year-on-year. Exports to the Belt and Road Countries (MOP209 million) expanded by 6.1%, while exports to the Portuguese-speaking Countries (MOP4 million) declined by 62.6%. Exports of Textiles & garments dropped by 5.9% year-on-year to MOP1.02 billion, while exports of Non-textiles went up by 34.5% to MOP7.87 billion.
By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP33.41 billion) and the EU (MOP31.63 billion) in the first eight months of 2021 surged by 117.8% and 161.8% respectively year-on-year. Imports from the Belt and Road Countries (MOP16.39 billion) leapt by 108.3%, while imports from the Portuguese-speaking Countries (MOP455 million) decreased by 0.8%. Analysed by place of consignment, merchandise import from Hong Kong (MOP87.16 billion) showed an upsurge of 146.9% year-on-year. Imports from mainland China expanded by 38.2% to MOP10.88 billion, with imports from the Nine Provinces of the Pan Pearl River Delta (MOP10.63 billion) rising by 37.2%. Imports of Consumer goods soared by 135.2% to MOP71.64 billion, of which imports of Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products (MOP16.42 billion), Garments & footwear (MOP8.87 billion), Watches (MOP8.30 billion), Handbags & wallets (MOP7.26 billion) and Gold jewellery (MOP6.39 billion) ballooned by 154.2%, 136.7%, 322.2%, 258.0% and 412.6% respectively. Besides, imports of Mobile phones (MOP13.65 billion) shot up by 704.2%. Imports of Fuels & lubricants (MOP4.00 billion) and Construction materials (MOP2.05 billion) registered respective growth of 13.1% and 76.8%.
External merchandise trade totalled MOP110.22 billion from January to August 2021, up by 111.4% compared with MOP52.14 billion a year earlier.
