Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 245,827 as at end-August 2021, up by 1.8% year-on-year. Light automobiles (112,442) and heavy motorcycles (104,584) increased by 2.1% and 3.4% year-on-year respectively. Meanwhile, new registration of motor vehicles in August dropped by 5.0% year-on-year to 1,017, with that of heavy motorcycles (615) falling by 6.5%. From January to August 2021, new registration of motor vehicles increased by 12.2% year-on-year to 8,567. There were 1,012 traffic accidents in August, with 368 persons injured. In the first eight months of 2021, a total of 8,532 traffic accidents were recorded, which resulted in one death and 2,944 injuries.
Cross-border vehicular traffic in August rose by 23.5% year-on-year to 283,216 trips, of which light automobile trips (250,600) grew by 23.3%. Meanwhile, gross weight of containerized cargo by land went up by 16.6% year-on-year to 2,901 tonnes, all of which passed through the Checkpoint of Macao Port Administration Area of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. From January to August 2021, cross-border vehicular traffic totalled 2,767,901 trips, a jump of 126.5% year-on-year, and gross weight of containerized cargo by land increased by 14.8% to 18,329 tonnes.
Gross weight of port containerized cargo climbed by 42.2% year-on-year to 14,971 tonnes in August; cargo being handled at the Inner Harbour (10,983 tonnes) and the Ká-Hó Harbour (3,988 tonnes) expanded by 16.2% and 271.9% respectively. From January to August 2021, gross weight of port containerized cargo went up by 33.9% year-on-year to 96,669 tonnes.
Arriving and departing commercial flights totalled 796 trips in August, an uplift of 86.9% year-on-year. Air cargo leapt by 98.3% year-on-year to 4,928 tonnes, of which gross weight of inward cargo (513 tonnes) rose by 44.8% while that of outward cargo (4,393 tonnes) surged by 120.2%. In the first eight months of 2021, number of arriving and departing commercial flights increased by 1.1% year-on-year to 10,001 trips, along with a growth of 53.9% in air cargo (27,315 tonnes).
As at the end of August, there were 102,256 fixed-line telephone subscribers, down by 7.2% year-on-year. Number of mobile phone subscribers decreased by 24.7% year-on-year to 1,234,085, ascribable to a 54.0% decline in prepaid SIM card subscribers (376,472). In August, internet subscribers rose by 7.8% year-on-year to 656,145. Total duration of internet usage in August edged down by 0.2% year-on-year to 142 million hours, while the duration from January to August 2021 inched up by 0.3% to 1.10 billion hours.
